First one to it!!!!! Just seen it on ESPN. Details posted soon. A 7 p.m. press conference is scheduled by the Sixers that will be aired on CSN.
Wow! Excellent decision by the 76ers, this should insure Dalembert being brought back and happy to play for the team again. Mo Cheeks is a great coach, but was just in a bad situation in Portland.
shoot i thought i was gonna say it first. what a great hire for philly, and i'm very happy for mo cheeks. he's one of the best people in basketball and i'm really glad to see him get another shot. that said, we've now added another quality coach to the open market. this should be interesting...
What's with the Sixers and their coaches? If this indeed is true, Cheeks would be the fourth coach in less than two years for the Sixers, if I remember right. What's with the lack of stability in the coaching ranks? I thought that O'Brien would be good to be coach for at least three years, but even someone who is as established as him only gets a year to prove himself? Cheeks is a great coach and I feel he could do a better job than JOB, but what's up with the constant firing and hiring of coaches? Expectations are definitely too high in Philly IMO.
Cheeks is so much of a part of Sixer history that this move makes lots of sense. I like Cheeks as a coach, and I have always felt that he never really got what he needed to succeed at Portland. His track record with hard-to-handle players has been mixed, and I hope he will be able to handle Iverson effectively. He also has the Webber malcontentedness to deal with. If I were Dalembert, I would definitely re-sign with the club.
Excellent selection. Cheeks is a damn good coach, in my opinion. He'll only feed off of the love the Philly fans have for him. I want to see how he deals with Iverson and Webber. Should make for an interesting situation, either it'll turn out great....or it'll be the usual. Cheeks is a player's coach, so it could go either way. I hope the best for him, I have a lot of love for the guy.
If I'm Jim O'Brien, I wouldn't have Donyell Marshall on my Christmas Card list. Anyways, good decision by BK. Iverson has always spoken highly of Maurice Cheeks.
Wow, what a move by Billy King! I had already thought he deserved that extension he just received recently, but after pulling this off he made certain that he truly deserved that extension. There has been word claiming Dalembert will leave Philly if O'Brien is at the helm, but now that he is gone and you hire a players coach things will just get better (hopefully). I know Webber must be ecstatic about this, Iverson on the other hand will learn a lot from Mo Cheeks, and hey he was one heck of a PG back in his days. But then again, will he decide to move Iverson back to the 2 or will he just continue from where O'Brien left off? So much questions needs to be answered and we have yet to even begin the NBA Draft. We have a long way to go?Right now, I'm in a lost of words, I?m so happy with this move. Now while we're rejoicing over the fact O'Brien is gone we also have to give him some credit. He made some very questionable moves and at times he made is seemed as if he wanted to be fired, but when necessary he came through. We won eleven additional games with him on the sidelines and his coaching gave the Pistons one hell of a fight in the Playoffs. So good luck to Jim O?Brien and I wish him well. Hopefully he can find another coaching job because I don?t think he?s that bad of a coach.
Yeah this is a great move...it came a lot sooner than expected but its definitely the right move...good move by Billy King and hoepfully Cheeks will manage to turn around the Sixers so far...I'm interested in seeing how he'll want to use the young players such as Dalembert, Korver, Green, and Salmons...
Woah this got me out of nowhere! Mo Cheeks is coming home... <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Mo Cheeks is a great coach, but was just in a bad situation in Portland. </div>Enough said. And so many didn`t realize. I will say that expect a similar coaching plan to Larry Brown, who he was tought under.
if we sign willie, and we have cheeks, he will ba able to use and maximize willies talents! yes! whopee! no more dumb jim obrien and his stupid coaching ways! whopee! i'm gonna have a party!
Great move by Philly, With Cheeks actually knowing how to use a consistent rotation of players, C-Webb and A.I will finally be happy.
Excellent move, this showed that Billy King really has the guts to do anything and the fact that he wants to win. He feels and I am sure a lot of the fans here feel that this team should have done better with C-Webb and Iverson paired up, they didn't do what they were expected to do and Billy King made the right move here. Too many players were on this guys bad side such as Willie Green, Samuel Dalembert, and Chris Webber. I believe O'Brien used C-Webb wrong as well, he is a great shooter but he needs to get the ball in his hands more in the post. Overall I am looking forward to next season now, Sammy most likely coming back, a new coach, and possibly we can make some noise in the draft or pick up a nice free agent.
Great move by Philadelphia and Billy King. O'Brien wasn't doing a bad job, it was just that he wasn't doing a great job. His decisions were questionable at times, changed too many lineups, and in addition to that feuded with some of the players. By bringing in Maurice Cheeks, it almost guarantees that Dalembert, Green, and some other players will want to stay. Hopefully, he'll be able to bring out the best in all the players and get the team chemistry at an all time high. However, this also raises a lot of questions such as whether Iverson will return to his old spot or stay at point guard like Avery said. Not to mention how the rotations will work out and what deals are going to be made to acquire players that fit Cheeks. Anyways, great move by King and I hope this move works out for the best. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">What's with the Sixers and their coaches? After he was fired, Ford was just the interim coach so its not like he was the first on the list. In fact, I actually remember Cheeks being their number one choice.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting D-Mob:</div><div class="quote_post">Why haven't they shown the press conference yet?</div> well, there's audio on sixers.com
I'll be in the minority on this decision. I don't think that this was a good move at all. Jim O'Brien may have rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, but he did maximize the potential of this Sixers team. Allen Iverson probably had his best season as a professional this year both on and off the court. The other players, however, aren't nearly as talented. Look at the roster, you are starting Iguadola and Korver at your wing positions, you have an ailing Chris Webber who can't guard a stationary object, and a non scoring center in Dalembert (unless it's an alley oop). Their bench stinks b/c the players are either too young and inconsistent (Green) or too old and water down (McKie). What more could he have done with this team? The Sixers made a mistake before hiring a players coach to replace a discipliarian. Randy Ayers was the opposite of Larry Brown and he didn't finish the season. Now Mo Cheeks is more ept to coach the Sixers than Ayers was, but need I remind everyone how the Blazers underachieved under his leadership while also finding themselves on the police blotters. Who is going to push Webber to get after defensively or challenge Iverson if he reverts to some of his previous behaviors. I don't think that Mo' has the personality to get after his underachieving players. Four coaches in the past two years for the Sixers. Billy King has shown that the inmates run the asylum in his organization. Mo' felt handcuffed when Darius Miles went off on him and the organization didn't back their head coach. Don't be surprised if a similiar situation unfolds in Philly. As much as I love to see black men succeed in positions of leadership, this is another bad move for Billy King b/c Mo' Cheeks is not a good fit for the 76ers. I hope that they both prove me wrong, though.
I really think it was more of Maurice Cheeks being on the market then O'Brien doing a poor job. Billy King said at the press conference that Cheeks was their guy three years ago and they couldn't land him. The next question was "Would you have fired O'Brien if Cheeks weren't on the market?" and Billy King responded no. So, Iron Shiek, I agree with you that there isn't much O'Brien could have done with the team but as it turns out Cheeks was the guy they wanted for the job after all. O'Brien will get another shot to be a coach but it won't be in Philly, I believe Cheeks was the right coach for the job.
