NFL Forums was hacked on Saturday. Some of you may have noticed that the forums were not working (getting a lot of errors when trying to go to differnent pages, etc.). A hacker some how got onto my server and changed the code for a lot of the site, installing a small snippet of code known as an iFrame. The result is that if you went to the front page of NFL Forums, you may have downloaded a trojan virus.

I personally ended up getting about 15 virus windows when I went to the site. I am currently going through all the files to look for more instances of the virus and have my server team looking into the security of the server to strengthen everything.

If you visited NFL Forums on Saturday at any point, I would HIGHLY recommend that you run an anti-virus program with updated definitions on your computer.

I apologize for the inconvenience. You may contact me at nfl at nfl-forums.com or just reply to this thread. If you find any links are not working correctly, or if you find any other instances of the virus, please let me know immediately.

Thanks for being on the ball Mark, and taking care of this quickly. I hope noone was too negatively affected. That's why the pros preach virus protection with regular updates. I'm glad you were able to resolve the issue. Thanks again for a great site and for all the work you do behind the scenes to keep it up and running strong.

not neccessarily, after i did a system restore, life was good again.

hey VF, if he changed the coding, how are you still able to edit some of the site? or cant you

What the person did was exploit a vunerability in the program that ran our columns. (If you don't remember, we used to have a few columns on the upper right hand side of the page). From there the person just added a couple lines of code to any page that had insecure permissions.

I went in to the server, deleted the all the columns and column software, and went through each file individually.

To answer your question nflfan, I could edit the site because I have root access to the server that the site is on. That is not affected by the code.

If you came to the site yesterday, clicked on any link and found the pages not working, then you need to run a virus scan on your computer...

I figured that's what happened. I spent a good chunk of yesterday trying to fix it. Wheee...

The latest version of Ad Aware did wonders for me in the end:

I guess on the up side, all of the anti-spyware stuff I installed found lots of bad things on my CPU. They're all gone now...

Always look on the bright side, eh?

The same thing happened to me. I got a thousand different trojan warnings, but my anti-virus program just took care of them right away and there were no complications or anything.

In the spirit of kcgsc's post. Thanks again VF for clearing up the problem and getting things back up and working again so quickly.

Thanks, but it looks like I left one more hole open on the site. No worries, though, it won't effect anyone, it just 'broke' the site.

Again, sorry about this guys...its one of the hazards of the internet. If anyone needs any help fixing their computers, please let me know...
