<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"> The sporting news Sports Illustrated asked 227 pro ballers, ``Who is the most underrated player in the NBA?'' Seattle forward Rashard Lewis garnered 8 percent of the vote, followed by Utah forward Andrei Kirilenko, Seattle guard Ray Allen and Milwaukee guard Michael Redd, all with 5 percent. Then the mag asked: ``Who is the most overrated?'' New Jersey guard Vince Carter was the runaway choice with 24 percent of the vote, followed by Denver forward Carmelo Anthony, 11 percent; Houston center Yao Ming, 10 percent; and Houston forward Tracy McGrady, 6 percent.</div> Source (requires registration) Adds more fuel to the topic of whether Yao is overrated. Now, McGrady is thrown in as well. Although Vince Carter dominated the voting, the Rockets' superduo in Yao and TMac got 16% combined. Opinions? PS: Thanks to SkiptomyLue11 for finding this article.
How can anyone say TMac is overrated? No one says he's the next great thing; the man has some awesome talent though...6'8", can handle the ball like a PG, shoots 30 footers like nothing, can pass and when hes focused defensively, he can shut anyone down ( I was impressed with his D on dirk in the mavs series)...but no one is saying he's the best in the L; all they say is he's arguably top 5....i dont think thats "overrated"... Yao, on the other hand, I will never understand why people dont respect him more...no, he's not the second coming of Shaq, and he will be better than Rik Smits ever was...he's smooth, agile, can pass and can shoot...he's not a power player at all; he's a finesse player...Don't focus on a man's weaknesses, focus on his strengths...at the end of the day, Yao will give you 18-20 points, 9 boards, 2 blocks and high field goal shooting every night...other than Shaq, what other center will give you that?
Yao and TMac are the two most bashed on people in the league. They can do anything, and everyone still hates them. Whoever voted, doesnt know what they are talking about. People have acknoledged that melo isnt doing good, he isnt overated. Why is TMac overated? He is probably the best player in the league. If anything, people underate him. Look at the all around offensive game and his defense. And Yao, everyone is complaing about him. All you ever hear from people is that yao cant do anything. How does that make him overated? Yao is the 3rd best center in the league and thats a known fact.
well alot of people say melo isnt doing good, but yet he made it to the playoff 2 times already rookie and sophmore season in teh nba, while lebron on teh other hand, everybody thinkks hes the next jordan, hasnt even made it yet. they look at yao being overatted because of his height and expect him to do this and that, they think mcgrady is overrated just because on any given night he could drop 20-35 points a game, but the fact of the matter is that he doesnt, hes a team player, he even understood that when he had joined with yao and the rockets. just because mcgrady doesnt drop the same amount of points he did when he was in orlando if you look at the other areas where he improved in you would see why. yao's not aggressive because he doesnt have to be, if you see his FG% then you would want him to shoot more then be more aggresive. peopel say alot of things, they just dont look at the facts
T-Mac and Yao: Most hated Duo Yao is more overhyped than overrated. He puts up good numbers and he does this while playing basketball all year with few breaks. People expected another Shaq but since he isnt they think he's overrated. People just dont like T-Mac because of everything that happened in Orlando. Cmon, how can a 2-time scoring champion be overrated? And a couple of times McGrady was accused of being too unselfish. So what does he have to do to get some respect? I think it's all just hate. These "pro ballers" are probably just jealous that they're outplayed by T-Mac and Yao. McGrady hits a Clutch 3 to Win the Game McGrady crosses over his defender and Dunks on a 7 footer McGrady is giving alot of his teammates open shots WOW this guy is really Overrated!
They are overrated by the general population, not so much by people who actually follow the game. Consider that Houston had probably the most national games last season, and the amount of All-star votes they got. Yao and McGrady are far more popular than, say, Tim Duncan, even though they aren't as good. So, either they are overrated, Duncan is underrated, or a combination of both.

Kobe gets more criticism that both of those players. That's how it is when your in the best in the league. So just get over it buddy. They all get it. Michael gets it. Shaq got it. Kobe gets it. Your guys get it. It's going to happen and that's the way it is. The only thing holding back Yao from owning the NBA is his physical precense. You talk about him being finesse but he will not reach the kind level of the league unless he truly dominates with a mix of power and finesse. T-Mac is in the shadows of Kobe and Lebron and Wade right now. So T-Mac needs to win some championships to gain that level of respect.
I can understand Yao getting votes for being overrated. Everyone has placed high expectations on him, and hasn't lived up to them, so many people would vote for him. It's not his fault, it is the fans for expecting him to be a Shaq. As for T-Mac, I don't understand. Look at what he's done in the playoffs. Add the fact that he has never been considered the best player in the league, and has never been considered as a player who can make his teammates better. But he's done a great job of it this season. I think he has exceeded the expectation that have been placed on him. Especially since everyone saw Yao as our go-to guy, not TMac.

Yao's been hated on ever since he got into the NBA; be it his race, his style of play and whatnot. However, TMac is a big surprise. He led Houston to a very successful season and about 22 players in the league think he is overrated? If anything, and I'm not starting an argument here, but if it was based on this season, I would expect Kobe Bryant to be up there in that list, higher than everyone else.
i agreethat yao is a bit overrated...b/c so far he hasn't live up to pipol's expectations....take note of "so far"...as for t-mac,i strongly disagree...i guess it's just that he hasn't get past the first round yet...and that he choked on game 7 against the mavs...other than that i dont see any reasons why he's overrated...

Well anyway, I don't see Kobe being voted one of the most overrated players. Yes he has been criticised, and is not respected by anyone, but he has always been given credit for what he's done in the league, with or without Shaq. This is all baout overraTed players, and Kobe ain't one of them.
It's not Yao that's the problem, its what the general public expected from him. Their thought line seems to have gone something like this: Yao is tall. Yao has media hype. Yao is tall. Conclusion?: Yao is Shaq from China. Its like Shooter said, Yao's a finesse player not a diesel train. Not to demean Shaq's style of play, they're just different.
Kobe aint overrated because he has already had success. If Kobe and T-Mac went back in time and switched careers it would end up T-Mac being successful and Kobe overrated.
Yeah this is a whole lot of BS to me. First of all, the only reason Yao is seen to many to be overrrated is because he was overhyped coming into the league by the media. And because he hasn't done everything that was expected of him, the general public shrugged him off in his third year as being overrated because he has not met the great expectations. Give the guy some time, he's still in his third year and only twenty five years old- plenty of time to mature and develop to become a great player. Now this whole McGrady thing being overrated? I don't by into it. Even if he is thought to be overrated, I would think it's only because of his Adidas line marketing him too much. I really don't know how else he can be considered overrated. The guy is a great player with almost unlimited shooting range, incredible footwork and handles for a six foot eight guy, as well as the ability to drive into the lane to wreck havok on the low post. People constantly contend that his defense is poor, which I have to admit at times is, but when he is motivated, he is a completely different defender. Take a look at the Dallas playoff series. McGrady suddenly looked reminiscent of a Jordan-esque player and played tough and with heart throughout the entire series. He played well on both ends of the floor matching up against whoever gave Houston problems. Overrate that for me.
Pro ballers!?! Of course some of them are gonna say Ming and Mac are overrated because they hate houston. Their opinions don't matter to me because they are scared.
if the self-proclaimed "2nd best center in the NBA" couldn't guard Yao in the Dallas series I doubt that he's THAT overrated. Let's get some more pieces around Yao/TMac - they're not far from competing for the championship.
I dont think Mac is overrated, Yao a little, Shaq and Wade are overrated, most of you did hear that hype that they were going to win the championship, but what happens? They lose in the West Conference Finals in the 7th game. Lots of people thought the Rockets were going to lose in the first round so I wouldnt count them as overrated.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting YugoRocketsfan:</div><div class="quote_post">I dont think Mac is overrated, Yao a little, Shaq and Wade are overrated, most of you did hear that hype that they were going to win the championship, but what happens? I dont think the Superman/Flash combo is overrated. They both were not 100%. Not saying that the Pistons couldnt beat a 100% combo but that things could have been different. As for the Rockets. I feel that McGrady is more disliked than overrated. And Yao was just overhyped. People dont overrate Yao anymore. They do expect more from him tho.
You cannot equate being more popular with being overrated. I'm tired of people knocking Yao for getting selected to All Star games by vote. Yao has an entire nation supporting him, he's a national hero, yet people like to hold it against him? If fans don't like seeing Yao get selected as a starter, then complain about the process of the fans selecting in the first place. Don't blame Yao and call him overrated. As for the title of the thread, the duo is far from overrated. If anything Tracy McGrady should have gained some respect back after his failed season in Orlando. Tracy McGrady became a leader in the playoffs, and did it by stepping up on the defensive end by guarding the Mavs best player, Dirk Nowitzki. I admit I was probably the hardest T-Mac critic last season and was disgusted by the way he played basketball. He changed my view on by the way he matured in Houston this season and listened to his coach to become a better player. Yao Ming is a victim of media hype. The media expected Yao to come into the league and dominate right away because of his size. However, anyone who actually watched Yao play prior to his NBA career realized he was a project. He had tremendous "potential" and still does, but you could tell he was never going to come right in and dominate. It's just not in Yao's nature yet to play with more fire and demand the ball more. He's shown flashes of it, and when he does he's unstoppable. Also people always overlook the fact he plays ALL year round. This takes a toll on any player, especially a player the size of Yao. This is only his 3rd year and Yao is still only 25. In the playoffs he scored in the 30's three times and really only had 1 bad game, but still managed to score 15 points and pull down 10 boards. Yao has constantly improved each season, he's hardly overrated.
T-Mac's never overrated. This guy can score in any style and have proved that he's the best scoring machine twice already. 6'8", lightning fast, long arms, feathery shooting touch...What more one player can have? And Yao....like Shape said, he's a victim of media hype. When he first came in, I thought he was going to get 25/10 cuz they made it sound like he's mad good.
