George Karl was suspended for violating draft rules. He was suspended for contacting a player not yet eligible for the NBA Draft. He will miss the first 3 regular season games of 05-06 season.

I've assumed people have heard by now, but he was watching his son, Coby, at a basketball camp where other college players were. He probably struck up some casual conversation or something, was found out by the league, and was fined. From the looks of it, it was pretty innocent as nothing knew that they were doing something wrong. But, he must have done something that upset the league, as his fine was double other tampering fines levied in past seasons.

Karl was there to watch his son...who happens to be an ineligible player as well, and according to league rules Karl should not be watching him either. However the real issue was Deron Williams who was also present and declared himself for the draft on the 19th...a day after Karl left the camp at Marquette.

According to ESPN (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/stor...marc&id=2075711) Karl didn't even know who Williams was and never spoke to him. It was simply his responsibility to leave the gym once he found out an ineligible player was there.

The league is just making an example of George. I understand the rule...and they can't make exceptions, however the fine and the suspension are way overboard given the situation.

Yeah this is way overboard because he was there to watch his son. With that being said however, coach Karl hsould have known that there were ineligable players there, and if he really wanted to watch his son, he may have been able to gain speical permission before he went.
