Cavs Draft Talk: Cavs Looking to Get in Draft

Yeah, I know we don't have a pick, but I've browsed around a few sites and heard we are trying hard to get into the mid-first round. Dan Gilbert is offering teams their choice of Sasha Pavlovic or Jiri Welsch in return for a mid first-round pick. Clippers, Celtics, Grizzlies are the likely team that will deal out of the first round, so I may get my wish after all.

If this is true about trying to get into the first round, I'm sure we'll be going after a PG for sure. I'd love to make the trade with the Clippers so that we have a better chance at landing one of the top guards such as Jarrett Jack or Raymond Felton. Jack is an unselfish player that has the ability to find the open man. Perfect size and strength to play in the NBA and has great athleticism. Raymond Felton most likely will be taken in the top 10, but if by some chance he's there if the Cavs pick, then I'd love to have him. He's one of those guards that I really like- He has amazing speed and makes things happen when he's on the the court. Either one of these guys would be perfect to come in and start immediately since McInnis is as good as gone.

I could also see us going after a SF. LeBron could move back to SG where he's much more comfortable and this would mean Ira Newble would come off the bench as a defensive specialist. This draft class is loaded with talented small forward prospects but the one that attracts me the most is by far Danny Granger out of New Mexico. He can do it all on offense- his range is unbelievable for being a 6'8 wing man and improved his perimeter shot to 48% from beyond the arc this past season. Granger also has some upside left. But Granger will most likely be taken in the top 10.

Like I said, this is all speculation but I figured I'd give you my thoughts on what I'd love to have if we got into the first round.

I don't know much about the prospective draftees, but I would rather them trade Jiri Welsch instead of Pavlovic if possible. If no-one takes it they could try with some throw-ins, but IMO, Pavlovic has to stay a Cav and get some game time.
About Pavlovic, his name is listed as Aleksander on both the Cleveland and NBA sites, as well as on NBA Live 2005, so I'm assuming it's his given name. How come he is always called Sasha, then? Does it have some spiritual or religious meaning where he comes from, or did he just think it was easier than Aleksander? Thanks for any help on that!

I'm not sure if anyone would want Welsch considering how inconsistent he is. I still can't believe Paxson was stupid enough to trade for him when he knew that would lose our 1st round pick for this year. Pavlovic has amazing range, but I think that Luke Jackson is going to breakout this year, so we probably won't play Pavlovic as much as we did last season. So I say we trade Pavlovic to the Grizzlies for their first round pick then we take Jarret Jack and let him groom behind Snow. I just hope the Grizz decides to trade their pick though.

I'm guessing Sasha is just his nickname, and that is much, much easier to say and spell over Aleksander.

It'd be easier to read, if you just edited your post. Anyways, The Welsch move would be a good one, Jiri isnt doing anything here so the Cavaliers could pick up Jake who's a serviceable backup and a huge upgrade in my eyes of DeSagana Diop, who's only done 2 things for the Cavaliers in his whole career, dissapoint and block shots. #21 would be very useful, the Cavaliers could pick up a shooter like Francisco Garcia or Rashad McCants if still available, so their void at the 2 wouldnt be as big and resigning Z like Ferry wants to do would be much easier.

    Not sure what you mean...

I would have loved to have seen the Suns trade go down, but it won't be happening now since we traded Welsch to the Bucks for a 2006 2nd round pick. There's still a chance that we get into the 1st round from what I've heard. The Grizzlies don't want their 1st round pick and are trying to get rid of Bonzi Wells along with it, and the Cavs have showed a lot of interest. The proposed trade that I've heard is we trade Eric Snow and Ira Newble to the Grizzlies for Bonzi Wells and the 19th pick. I personally would like to Jarrett Jack, but I can't see him dropping to the 19th pick. So Garcia or McCants would be just fine with me.
