Wake Forest Star Feeling College & NBA Tug

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">CHICAGO - The other night Wake Forest center Eric Williams asked himself a difficult question:

Why would he cut short the best time of his life?

"I mean, who wants to leave college basketball?" Williams said Wednesday. "There's nothing like it."

Yes, Williams is conflicted. He turned pro with the option to return to Wake for his senior season. He's curious whether he's ready for the NBA. But he wonders if that's really the world he wants right now.

"In high school, you're playing to get a scholarship to a good school. Here (in the NBA), you're playing for the money," Williams said. "College is the only time when basketball is just basketball. Just fun. It would be hard to leave."

Williams is using this week's NBA pre-draft camp to help gauge whether he should stay in the draft. He's likely in a muddle of players who could be drafted anywhere from late in the first round to late in the second. That represents a wide gap financially -- first-rounders get guaranteed three-year contracts. Second-rounders sometimes don't last through their rookie seasons.

"If I knew for a fact that I was going to be a first-round pick, then I'd probably stay in the draft," Williams said.

    And if not?

"Then I'd probably go back to school."</div>
