<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">CHICAGO - The NBA pre-draft camp in many ways speaks directly to the superficiality of today's society: It's all about how you look.

By NBA standards, Chuck Hayes doesn't pass the "look" test. At a shade under 6-foot-7, he's considered small for the type of game he plays. And while he's powerfully built, he doesn't possess the fluidity or leaping ability of an elite NBA athlete.

So in order to impress scouts in Chicago before the June 28 draft, Hayes realized he'd have to carve a niche, which is basically the same one he carved at UK: hard-working, unselfish, willing to do whatever it takes to help the team.

"The people I talked to before I got here told me, 'Chuck, stick to what you do best," Hayes said. "I'm just going to be active, play defense, be aggressive and be competitive."

Still, with NBA big shots all over the place, even an ultimate team player like Hayes admitted it's hard to resist the temptation of looking out for No. 1.

"Some parts of you want to be selfish, but you don't want to be too selfish because everybody's watching your every move," he said.

Hayes is viewed by most NBA scouts as a borderline second-round pick. But that doesn't mean he can't be an NBA success story.

NBA consultant Chris Ekstrand said there is room in the league for guys like Hayes and pointed to former pros Tyrone Corbin and Chucky Brown as examples.

Corbin was selected 46th overall by San Antonio in 1985 and played 15 years in the league. Brown was also a second-round draftee who played with 12 different teams during his 12-year career.

"If you go based on the talent level of Tyrone Corbin or Chucky Brown you might predict they'd be in the NBA three or four years," Ekstrand said. "These guys carved out long careers in the NBA, not on talent alone, but they did it because they outworked people and wanted it more."</div>

All Hayes can do is keep doing what he's doing. He's definitely got a disadvantage with size, but he goes out there gives it all and that very well could get him drafted.

I never really liked Kentucky, but when I watched them in the tournament this year, I just loved watching Hayes play. He just goes all out on the court. I hope he gets on a team where he can show his ability.
