<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Detroit Pistons president Joe Dumars said Friday that he granted the Cleveland Cavaliers the opportunity to talk to Pistons coach Larry Brown because Dumars wanted to give Brown other options in case he could not return to coaching due to his health. "In terms of permission, here's what happened," Dumars told Sirius satellite radio show "Full Court Press". "[Cavaliers owner] Dan Gilbert and I have known each other for a long time. He said to me, 'Listen, I'd just like to let Larry Brown know that if health-wise he can't come back and coach, I'd like to let him know that this opportunity would be out there.' "I said, 'Danny, that's fine. You can let him know that.' He let him know. And that was it. That's all it was supposed to be. Just letting him know, in case you're not healthy, it's out there. Then it took on a life of its own and turned into something else and just got real silly." On Saturday, Dumars told the Detroit News why he would let this process take place during the playoffs. "Why not? We talked about it. He assured me it wouldn't interrupt his focus." If the call fom Gilbert had been about the coaching position, Brown told Dumars he wouldn't even have taken the meeting. "Look, it's totally his call, OK," Dumars told the paper. "This hasn't been a distraction for us playing basketball, it really hasn't. We're sitting here in the Finals as we talk about this. It didn't stop us from doing what we had to do." </div> Source
It's nice to see an explination about what really happened here. I for one was very curious on why Dumars would grant permission, but after reading this, it kind of does make sense. I mean the Pistions are only offering Brown the coaching position, so what happens if he can't coach? The Pistons are not going to offer him anything, so why should Dumars not have allowed this meeting? Knowing all the facts, I think that Dumars madre the right decision.
