I think it basically kills the Junior College tour. The Kids that can't qualify for the SATs will go to the D-League (no pun intended) and focus on Hoops 24-7 instead of having to split time with a JC and worrying about eligibility.

The D-league will probably take a while before it actually gets competitive enough to take it seriously, but at least it provides a way for standout 18 year olds to get drafted and get some playing time like they would get if in college (Carmelo Anthony proved that talent in his freshman year). It probably won't be used in that way unless there's some highschooler underachiever, but it's a good concept when you have a high potential guy like Dorrell Wright behind a ton of shooting guard options on a winning team in Miami. It's just easier to have him get some burn in the D-league and maybe throw in some old vets to develop him in the D-league lockerroom or maybe ones that you dont' really want to deal with on your regular roster like Christian Laetner or Glenn Robinson or Jamal Mashburn. Of course, the latter may be a bad idea unless the idea is you want to plant some bad influence players on some other team's 18 year old star rookie or get one of your player coaches like Avery Johnson to tamper with the young kid into forcing a trade or something. Hopefully, every team has their own ownership of farm teams like in baseball so that won't be a problem.

I guess in the end, we can't help that 4 year 8-12 million dollar rookie contract + shoe endorsements being lucrative in influencing people who are in a desperate situation to want to take the money for the family's welfare, even if it comes at a sacrifice of what's really good for the kid in the long run. Agents are kind of grimy in they get a cut of what their client makes (like a bunch of pimps) and who knows if the parents are advocates of the importance of education and life after basketball or possible medical or career ending issues. Apparently Greg Oden's mother doesn't think so as he's been whining to the press about the 19 year old rule.

My sense was that there was little difference between the D league and the CBA,but now the D league will have players who belong to NBA teams,I don't know how many guys we can stash in the D league, what time limit applies, how many times you can call a guy up-and then send him back.

Underage guys get the option of college-JC-Prep school-D League,I guess. Mayo would be 19 by the draft after his HS senior year. Already he has game,so he won't see any D-League. Guy's like Amir Johnson,Monta Ellis,in this draft, may find themselves farmed out to the D. A RD 1,like Green or Blatche has good game but needs to adjust to playing with NBA caliber competition,so they'd likely stay in the NBA. It sounds like we could send a RD 2 guy to the D league, keep him, while using a roster spot for a FA. A big deal may be that a team building has more ways to check out the various sleepr/undrafted types, late bloomers, etc.

You'd think the League would expand the draft to 3 rounds if they wanted to develop this league

They probably might have to in the future if there were something like two farm teams per nba team in the minor leagues. It'd be a cool place to stick Ansu Sesay and be able to call him up. It sucks we had to waive that guy. He looked pretty versatile, he was tall, athletic, defensive oriented and he improved his shot. He was hitting them when most expected him to miss. Also he was NBDL MVP so he's probably too good for that league.
