Not too familiar with the way realgm works, but assuming that's a legit story and not just something someone cooked up... It's about damned time. Q wasted his post presence in phoenix and was way too unreliable with the 3's, hell I don't even know if he showed up to the playoffs this year. He should go back to what he does best and stay under the hoop.

Not a bad move but they could of gotten someone way better than Kurt Thomas and a #1.

He did not get traded, it's just at trade rumor.

I don't really think this a good trade for the Suns. They trade away a 25 year old Q for a 33 year old KT, who makes more than him. More importantly, the small ball-high tempo game becomes limited. This is what made them very sucessful. Thomas does not fill any of the Suns needs, because like Amare, he's a PF. By adding KT, you're not going to be as sucessful as last year if you run a run and gun style. If you just go back to the old Suns of 2002-2003, they won't be as sucessful as they were last year. In order for this franchise to move forward, they need to acquire a Center that can fit into this system like a Dalembert.

Do you think they should sacrifice a bit of the high-tempo ball to add more frontcourt help? Kurt Thomas gives them a very solid and experienced low post defender to come in and guard the opposing teams best big. Jim Jackson can also fill in Q?s role as a scorer in transition. Also the pick and roll which Nash has been using this season should be effective with Kurt Thomas as well with him.

They wouldn't be sacrificing a "bit" of the high tempo ball; letting Q go is one thing, because he's replacable, but then your adding Thomas. The only way Thomas could mesh good with the Suns style is if he comes off the bench, somewhat like Hunter from last season. The thing with the Suns is, they plan an uptempo game, and since they are so effective at it, the other team is usually forced to play that way too, which means KT would have to be running in transistion more and not playing in the half court as much. It wouldn't make sense to pay him 8-9 million dollars to do things which don't really fit him. That would be under utilizing him.

The designed pick and roll that the Suns run with Nash and Amare is run fairly quick and done with a lot of time left on the shot clock. Plus, I wouldn't see the Suns running alot of pick and rolls for Thomas anyways. Why run a pick and roll for Thomas when you can run one with Amare or a play for JJ or Nash himself (creating for teammates)? Thomas might be effective nailing that shot, but the Suns are better off keeping Q and keep things as it is. If they do choose to move Q, it should be for an athletic big who can rebound and do some things inside.

With Nash, Amare, Marion and Johnson, the Suns wouldn?t be sacrificing too much. Even if every single player isn?t scoring on the break, it doesn?t mean they?ll be significantly less effective. While the Suns lose some offense in transition, they get better in half court situations. This move will allow Marion to move back to the small forward where he?ll be much more effective and once the Suns make it to the playoffs and start playing the real big men of the West, he will not be at a liability defensively. Kurt Thomas doesn?t get paid 8-9 million dollars; only in the final year he gets 8 million.

On offense, the pick and roll can become a real staple. If teams find it hard to guard the pick and roll, wouldn?t it make it all the more harder if yet another big man can hit the midrange jumper? I agree, I think an athletic, Dalembert-like center would be a good thing for them and better than Kurt Thomas, but if the Thomas/Q deal does go through, I don?t think it will be a bad move for the Suns.

I love this deal for the Suns, but I'm not sure why they need to give away a 1st round pick along with Q.

Q isn't really a huge sacrifice, it's taking back Thomas which changes everything. By bringing in KT, you're adding a person who can't thrive on the break. That limits their transistion game, which is their biggest strength. If they were to settle for more half-court sets, they would be limiting the amount of fast break oppurtunities and limiting their points.

Immediately you wouldn't look at it as a bad move, but down the road you will begin to. Honestly, I would rather pay Steven Hunter 2 million to start center for the Suns and be able play their tempo of basketball throughout the whole game, than pay Thomas the money he gets which changes the offense. A player like Steven Hunter (or even Andray Blatche?) can run and guard the opposing teams bigs who are adapting the Suns transition play. When the Suns push the ball and score and do it for a good period of time, the other team is going to start to try to do the same, and that's when Kurt Thomas' weakness' come in. He won't be able to guard anybody on the opposing team, which would force him to the bench. Having KT would be more deadly for the Suns as a scoring option, but all they really need is for Hunter to play 20-25 minutes and give his rebounding/shot blocking and transisition D, and get Jim Jackson's fire power off the bench.

If the trade does go down, I wouldn't be in rage because I hate the trade, I would just be somewhat dissapointed because I believe their are other options out their to fill in the big man need.

If they trade Q they get more cap space to resign guys like Joe Johnson, it will also allow Amare to go back to his natural position power forward. On top of that the Suns add more depth, which they definitely lacked in their frontcourt. On the other hand this frees up playing time for guys like Mo Taylor in New York.

Richardson happened to be in New York this morning for an apparel photo shoot when he got the news from his agent and Suns president and general manager Bryan Colangelo. That was news to Richardson, who said he thought he was part of "the core" Phoenix talked about keeping together after the season.

"It definitely is a shock but I also understand it's a business decision," said Richardson, who signed a six-year contract last summer with Phoenix. "It's something that comes along with being a NBA player. I've gotta roll with it." Richardson said Colangelo told him that the deal was made to help make financial space with the contract extension of Amar? Stoudemire and re-signing of Joe Johnson forthcoming this summer. Richardson had five years and $37.7 million left on his contract. </div>

This newspaper is reporting it's a done deal.

This doesn't create cap space for them to sign JJ or Amare. It wouldn't really matter though since they can offer more to these players than any other team. Their payroll actually goes up for now, but once Thomas' contract is up at the end of 07-08, they would be saving the money they would of paid Q for the following 2 seasons, subtracted by the difference in salaries from KT and Q from their contracts in 2005-2008.

    Thanks for the update, shape.

I don't really know about the rest of you guys, but it's not official to me until ESPN reports it [IMG]

Wow. I did not see this trade coming. KT is one of the most underrated players in the NBA and a great defender...but, I don't think he will have much effect on the Suns. Q, on the other hand, is 25 year old with the ability to hit the 3 when needed. He can shoot too much at times, also...that comes along with being a young player. The Suns did what they had to do, that is what matters.

I don't know what to say as sad as I am to see Q leave, I would want PHX to grab a center in the off-season and that is what they had to do to get one. The Suns gave up WAY too much though, Quentin Richardson is a 25-year old player who had sucess in this system. The Suns had sucess running this system as well, now I would love Kurt Thomas on the Suns but I would expect to give up nothing more then a bench player or two. Kurt would be nice to have a center coming off the bench when Amare gets in foul trouble, not starting to just slow down the tempo that the Suns like to run. I have no idea why the Suns are making this trade. They had the best record in the West last year and they just need to re-load, not re-vamp 40% of their lineup. They can get an athletic center such as Johan Petro with their 21st pick or even a guy like Wayne Simien that would get the job done for a big man off the bench for the Suns. Hey if the Suns are going to trade Q and their pick for KT why not just trade Q and the pick for a 22-year old center named Channing Frye? Or you can take you chances on draft day and hope that Sean May or Martynas Andriuskevicius slip.

All the Knicks fans on this board should be throwing their hands up because not only do they get a sharpshooter in Q but they hold three picks in this 2005 NBA Draft which would make it very easy to trade up and grab a player around 10-15. Maybe they will trade the 30th and the 21st for the 15th and grab Hakim Warrick who they were impressed with. Then you have to look at the Knicks as a contender in the Atlantic playoff race. [IMG]
