<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">With less than a week to go before Tuesday's NBA Draft, the Warriors are winding down their workout schedule by taking a final look -- and in some cases, a second look -- at candidates for their ninth overall pick.

Syracuse senior Hakim Warrick will work out for Golden State again on Sunday, according to Warrick's agent, Bill Duffy. Also scheduled to be in town that day is New Mexico forward Danny Granger, setting up a possible sequel to the pair's private workout in Chicago during the NBA's pre-draft camp.

Several scouts in attendance said the workout was one of the week's most competitive and Duffy described it as a "battle royal" between equally ranked players with different skills.

The session was unconventional: It pit two lottery picks, represented by different agents, in one-on-one drills, but both agents were pleased with the results.

"The teams have seen these guys play," said Mark Bartelstein, who represents Granger. "You want people to see what your heart is all about, the fire you have inside you, how you deal with adversity. (Teams) are investing in who they are."

Both Warrick and Granger are making return visits to Golden State, but only Warrick's qualifies as a true second look. Granger called off his initial session after a few warm-up drills because of an injured toe. </div>

Ah Yes,it's coming down to Ike,Danny and Hakim, pretty much my "most likely" of about a month ago, with the W's probably figuring Frye to the Knicks at pick 8. That the W's have not seemed to look at guys who figure for mid-first may indicate they don't have a trade cooking,no G Green audition,so a trade-up probably is also unlikely.

also-Petro has not been invited to showcase his great not-ready-for-Euro-Primetime game.
Interesting ,Granger,Diogu,Warrick, all had strong seasons, all 6-8,more or less, but quite different in their style, physical package. In common, all play D,had 8 1/2rbd or more and scored at least near 20 per. I saw each of them have a game where they showed plenty of tools and tricks that will work at the next level [IMG] Which do the W's take?

Granger has been mentioned as maybe going ahead of our pick, but he also is especially interesting if there is any idea of trading Dunleavy. Hakim has a natural run+leap style,a fastbreak finisher, slasher, like J Rich,Pietrus,While Ike is the best at an inside post-up,putbacks. Granger has the best perimeter shot, though Ike's 3 improved a lot this year. My sense is edge to Ike because the in the paint offense and defense he'd bring is something that would be a special plus. You need a power guy who runs well in a transition-up tempo attack, and while he is not as fast as Hakim,he's got 20lb more, and is faster than Troy,Adonal,Zarko, and a finisher. Basically,It could work fine with any of these 3. I just hope there's no last minute urge to take Vasquez [IMG]

    Ike compliments Monty's coaching style...
    Warrick compliments B Ditty's game...
Granger compiments the entire Warrior package.

I would take Granger if we could get something good for Dunleavy in terms of a big man. Dun's qualifying offer is like $6 mil so that might be something to avoid if we're looking as Pietrus and Zarko as the future. If we get Granger, I'm assuming then that Dunleavy's gone.

Granger is also unselfish and doesn't have an ego, and is a pretty smart team player that can do a lot things very well at 4 positions. The warriors would be doing this to simply avoid locking themselves up right now so they can leverage a deal with Dunleavy later or just trade him or let him walk.

I still think the more pressing need is somebody on Granger's level that can play power forward. That seems to be Ike Diogu (can shoot, can block shots, rebound, score inside, pass, put the ball on the floor some) and he could run the floor at power forward. He's very high energy, but he doesn't seem to have any ups or explosiveness attacking the rim. But he did get fouled a lot in college and scored in heavy traffic (double and triple teams).

One thing that was interesting was they pointed out the new CBA rule regarding 2nd rounders, so we might want to hold on to our pair of second rounders if they're the steals of the draft.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"><font size="2">The new labor deal includes a cap exception known as the Gilbert Arenas Rule. Teams over the salary cap can now match offers for their second-round draft picks using their mid-level exception. That means interested teams are now restricted to offering the mid-level salary for the first year of any deal before jumping to maximum levels. </font> <font size="2">In 2003, the capped-out Warriors were unable to match Washington's six- year, $60 million offer to Arenas, who had completed a two-year rookie contract. </font>

</div> Also anyone else worried about Granger or Warrick being an injury prone player? I think even Dunleavy was more durable. Warrick was not injury prone, but the dude is so skinny, any old power forward or strong small forward can lean on him and probably hurt his back or something. I guess if we landed Warrick, we'd probably use him as a potential defensive stopper at the 3, that could play some at the 4 getting by on cutting to the hoop, posting up the other team's 3 and sinking some pull up midrange shots off the dribble penentration. I don't think his ballhandling is that good, although he's improved a bit and has improved every year. He's got great athleticism and probably could dunk on anyone. Watching him play he seems like D-miles on offense and Stromile Swift on blocking shots and alley oops.

Good news, Id be happy with any of the 3. Sounds like Diogu would give us what we're lacking and I like everything Ive heard about Granger. If we go after Warrick hopefully we'll trade down a few spots.

Vasquez would be fun to watch though. His blocks, putbacks, dunks in traffic and alley oop dunks are nasty. He's also got a midrange shot to make pick and roll dangerous.

You'll like Ike's power game too,he will dunk right through a good defense-and make the FT. Love's to take it to the hoop but a real plus this year was much improved range. He made 40% of 3's. Doesn't look to shoot a lot from outside, but can. I'd hope to see him play at about 245,rather than 255. We talked about whether he can play some 3,and how explosive he is,and I think the Weight he plays at is a factor. This year he played a bit lighter, and was a quicker, more explosive and versatile player than what I saw a year ago. Last years Ike was more the guy described in "profiles",a power player more like Simien.I think the E Brand comparisons came from that. This year's Ike was more active and versatile, and explosive. With a good training program he may even add both strength and quicks to his game

Throw out the Mocks-the Lakers-Blazers have a swap rumour with LA getting pick 3-Gerald Green,Portland getting #10-Andrew Bynum. Caron Butler,Akins to Portland,Reuben Patterson to LA. LA gets Green fairly cheap, might the W's make a last minute offer?

Warricks athletic ability is NASTY..but I just can't see him improving his all around game. If Granger and Diogu are gone by our pick and Warrick is our man then I agree with Warrior that we should trade down and even with that I'd be hard pressed not to draft Blatche.

Hey HGH, I can't see Warrick fitting in anywhere in the pros, but there's definite upside to his game if he develops his shot range and has improved his handle. His work ethic is great, but I wonder too if he has any chance to improve his skill. Like is he a born basketball player starting late or is he just a track athlete.

Blatche sounds intriguing as well because Andris Biedrins probably doesn't seem like the type to ever fix his shooting, but he's so quick laterally he even guarded some small forwards in preseason camp. Blatche could be a center or power forward depending on what Biedrins' role is.

You think Mullin will take a chance on Vasquez if he falls? He didn't show up for his Utah workout, so the Jazz might pass on him. Raptors might take him though. I just hope we wind up with somebody solid on both ends and hopefully Diogu. Diogu seems like the type that can score in so many different ways. He can handle the ball some and drive. He's got up and under moves, he can put english on the ball and finish with his off hand going high off glass, he can shoot from deep, he can post up and bang down low. Defensively, this guy is supposed to be pretty solid.

Ike Diogu is starting to sound more and more like the pick for the Warriors. It's a solid pick and fills a need, but I don't think the Warriors should be conservative with this pick. I'd like to see the Warriors take a gamble for once and draft a player who will make other GMs who passed on him kick themselves. The Warriors have dealt with a lot of regrets for passing up on players with upside to go with the safe pick. Hindsight is 20/20, but you could put together an All Star team with all the players the Warriors have looked over.

    Joe Smith over Kevin Garnett
    Antawn Jamison over Vince Carter
    Todd Fuller over Kobe Bryant
Mike Dunleavy Jr. over Amare Stoudamire

This year more than other years, the Warriors can afford to go high risk, high return on their pick. The player I would like to see the Warriors draft is not Ike Diogu, Hakim Warrick, or Franz Vazquez. I want to see them gamble and draft Andrew Bynum.

Yes the pick is a risk, but the upside on Bynum is tremendous. If you could fast forward a year from now, and Bynum played with UCONN and then declared, he would be a top 3 pick in next year's draft. Andrew Bynum did not come out of nowhere, he was a Blue Chip high school prospect, he was ranked the #1 Center amongst high school players by Rivals.com. The Warriors get a shot at a kid with top 3 potential a year early. Andrew Bynum is not ready to contribute this year, maybe not even next year, but with the new CBA, the Warriors can let him dominate and develop in the NBDL. By year 2.5 or 3 he should be starting for the Warriors.

Andrew Bynum is a throw back center, he's not a finesse player. He's a power player, has soft hands, and great footwork. His size is also deceiving, he's an explosive jumper and can run the floor just fine. There have been conflicting reports about his work ethic, some say he could improve in that area, but others report his work ethic is tireless. Unlike Desagana Diop, Bynum actually has an understanding of the game and a high basketball IQ.

He has the potential to be an impact player, something Diogu, Warrick, and Vazquez will never be. Those 3 will be role players their entire career. The Warriors can get role players anytime they want, but landing a future impact player should be their strategy. At worst Bynum becomes a role player just like the other 3 players, but having a 7 foot / 270 center is not a bad option to have as a role player.

If the Warriors pass on him, I hope the Lakers take Bynum assuming they stay at #10.

Bad news for Warrior fans wanting Diogu or Bynum, neither were invited to the Green Room. For those that don't know, who gets an invitation to the green room is the best indication of who's going in the lottery. The league polls all the teams and it's basically the only time GM's are actually honest about who they think they'll take and who will be gone by the time they pick.

Instead of Diogu and Bynum being on the list, Villanueava and McCants made the cut.

    Here's the entire list:

    1. Bogut
    2. Felton
    3. Frye
    4. Granger
    5. Green
    6. Korolev
    7. May
    8. McCants
    9. Paul
    10. Vazquez
    11. Villanueava
    12. Warrick
    13. Webster
    14. Deron Williams
    15. Marvin Williams
    16. Wright

It's still certainly possible that the Warriors take Diogu, but at this point I'd say its unlikely. But in the same article, Ford says Diogu is still in the mix with the Warriors along with Frye, Granger, and Warrick. He says that Frye and Granger should be off the board by #9, so it's really between Warrick and Diogu.

Here's my best guess at how things will go (I'm just doing numbers because of the amount of trade talks that are still going on surrounding the top 6 picks):

    1. Bogut
    2. Marvin Williams
3-5. Deron Williams, Green, Paul (in any order)
    6. Frye
    7. Felton
    8. Vazquez
    9. Warrick/Diogu (probably Warrick...damn)

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">"There's not a lot of 5s and he has an NBA body," said one Western scout. "Whoever drafts him, and I see why they would, is drafting upside. He'd be a lottery pick if he went to UConn. I wouldn't say it's a mistake. A risk? Yes." </div>

Found this quote on Bynum in an article today.

The Green Room might be set, but there's no guarantee those players will round out the lottery. Last year Sergei Monya was invited and ended up #23 and Jameer Nelson at #20, a year before Maciej Lampe lasted all the way into round 2, I think the same happended to Rashard Lewis.

    Interesting...

I've never heard the term "green room" before, but when I searched for it, I found this: http://www.nba.com/draft2001/features_anal...nav=ArticleList

    I'm still not even sure...

um, I guess that means we're likely but not exclusively picking either one of Felton, Frye, Granger, Green, Yaroslav Korolev, Sean May, McCants, Fran Vazquez, Villanueva, Hakim Warrick, Webster, or Antoine Wright.

Diogu could be like 2 out of 30 GM's opinion on who will be taken in one of the top 15 picks.

You're right Shape, every year one or two guys in the green room drop to the last third of the first round or lower. Everyone remembers Rashard Lewis crying in '98 as he dropped to the second round.

But the thing that worries me is that I can't remember the last time a team picking at #9 or higher took a guy who wasn't in the green room.

btw, I totally agree with you that the Warriors should use this pick on a high risk/high reward guy. Bynum would be coming into a great situation where he'd have guys in front of him and could take his time developing. Blatche would probably fit the Warriors running style of play better, so I'd love to trade down and take him as well. I'm also one of the minority who likes Andriuskevicius.

However...I did forget to chastize our beloved owner for perpetuating the myth that the Warriors had a shot at drafting Vince Carter. They never did, Toronto was going to take him regardless. The deal was only made because Dallas was trying to move up to #4 to take Jamison, who the Warriors obviously also wanted. The Warriors blocked the move and forced Toronto to deal with them by threatening to take Carter at #5.

So here it comes...shame on you Shape...

I had no idea about the Vince Carter - Antawn Jamison deal, I guess it also explains why the Warriors included everyone's favorite player 'cash' as part of the trade.

BTW - I think the Bill Duffy favor is going to come in Rnd 2 when the Warriors draft his other client, Brandon Bass.

Andray Blatche is another great choice, he's been under the radar because he started his workouts later than anyone else. The kid averaged 16RPG and 8BPG in highschool, plus has a perimeter game. Rashard Lewis put up 12RPG and 5BPG in highschool, plus has a perimeter game. Striking similarities.

Any aspirations of drafting Martell Webster?

This draft is really unpredictable I can't wait until Tuesday. So many options the warriors could take and I'm excited for the first time since the J-Rich, Murph, and Arenas draft. I think Bynum has a freak body and I like the upside but Blatche has that all around game that he showed at the high school all star games which really had me [IMG] I thought the kid liked spending time 20 feet away from the basket but when he started showing the post game I really wouldnt mind if the warriors took a flyer with this kid. Thanks for your input on Blatche CR2 i think the kid could be special.

I remember when all these slept on players like granger, bynum, and diogu werent even lottery picks and I was thinking we could trade with denver and get two great players at 20 and 22...blatche and bynum would have been a force.

Most people don't know the truth behind the Carter/Jamison deal. It's just that hardcore Warrior fans had to take so much crap over the first few years of Carter's career, they really had an interest in finding out the true story. I was always surprised the Warriors didn't try harder to publicize the story behind the trade, seeing as how they took such a PR hit for trading away a player they never really had to begin with.

As for Webster, I like him a lot. I think he's the highschooler least likely to fail. It's just that the Warriors don't have any room for him at sg/sf. My guess is he replaces the shooting Orlando lost when they traded Mobley.
