<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Michael Finley's career with the Mavericks could come to an end this summer because of a clause in the new collective-bargaining agreement that could save owner Mark Cuban as much as $51 million. Two sources said Thursday that Finley, who has been with the Mavericks longer than any other current player, would be targeted if the Mavericks exercise this cost-cutting option. The new one-time loophole allows a team to waive a player and be relieved of any luxury-tax responsibility attached to that player's contract. Finley is owed $51,796,875 over the next three seasons. Cuban would still have to pay that in salary. But because the Mavericks' payroll is so high, Cuban also has to pay a dollar for every dollar that they are over the luxury tax. By jettisoning Finley, he could knock $15 million off his luxury tax next season. The Mavericks were well over the $61 million luxury-tax threshold last season. Essentially, the remainder of Finley's $51 million contract could cost Cuban $102 million if they remain over the luxury-tax threshold, which is probable if Finley is retained. </div> Source
Very insightful and interesting observation. Thanks for the post. I'm a Mavs fan. Besides Dirk, they need a smooth gunner who can nail open looks. Howard is a slasher and fighter and can shoot but not at the level Finley could. Daniels is the guy who they thought could be the SG and who can be with time, confidence and hard work. So do they try to get Ray Allen or Michael Redd and give up Finley and Daniels?
they are just tearing Dallas apart. Nash leaves. Dirk might get traded and now Finley. Are they gona play like they did in the 90s with losin records. i doubt Cuban wants that

This move would save Cuban $51Million in luxury tax money. That's a lot of gumballs even for a billionaire. He could just turn around and give Finley a piece of the money he saved and sign him for the veteran minimum.
Well Cuban thinks that everything can be done in a day. He doesn't understand that the players have to have a chemistry. He dismantled them when he traded away Van Exel & others. Than dismantled them again getting rid of Walker & Jamison. So it will be intresting to see what happens this year. I think the Cavs might be intrested in Finley if they really can't get anyone else. That probalbly won't be a problem though.
That's horrible that Cuban would have to cut a great player like Finley. He's a great contributer to the Mavs. Without Finley the orginazation would'nt be nearly as successful. But I guess in the end it's all about buisness.
It would be tough to see Fin go, hes been with the Dallas franchise but like AA said, it really is all about business in the end. But knowing Mark Cuban and how long he kept Finley around, we might sign him back, hopefully. He`s a great weapon for the team. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">they are just tearing Dallas apart. Nash leaves. Dirk might get traded and now Finley. First off Dallas won more games than they did last year with Nash, so it shows they do fine without him. Second Dallas has a bright future with a young Dirk and the raw trio of Devin Harris, Josh Howard, and Marquis Daniels. And for what you said that Dirk might get traded, let me just say as long as Cuban`s around, I don`t see Nowitzki going anywhere.
