Anyway, kinda sucks we got our first loss of the summer league, but we weren't really at full strength. Let's just hope that our rooks can play at this level during the regular season, although summer league bums are nothing compared to the actual NBA.

Heh we went 25-7 with our starters early on, then we lost the remaining quarters 96-56 afterwards [IMG]

I guess our scrubs must have been struggling.

Just got back from the SPL Laker v. Raptors game. I'll have a more detailed write up, but just a few highlights and lowlights. I have to admit no one really impressed me much from either side and the game was very sloppy. I cannot believe some of these players are actually being considered to play in the NBA. I'm going to be very critical of the Raptors in this post based on what I saw with my own eyes.

    - Charlie Villanueva - I actually ran into him while I was on the phone heading to the ticket line. He's a lot bigger than I thought he and very dysfunctional. (more on this in the write up) Unfortunately, he did not play today, so the only positive I could come up with, is he's going to be a legit PF in the league.

    - Joey Graham - He was easy to recognize because he was more physically built than anyone on the court. In the warm ups he showed off his athleticism and power with some explosive dunks.

Positives - Defensively he's very solid, also very supportive of his teammates and definitely on a higher energy level than anyone else on the Raptor team

Negatives - Offensively he was really disappointing, he has no post game at all, passive, and settled for far too, many jumpshots

    - Uros Slokar - He was very goofy looking and looked unsure of himself the entire game. He slouched his shoulders and looked lost on the court for the majority of the time he was in.

Positives - Nice shooting stroke from the FT line and the 3pt line. He's a decent passer as well.

Negatives - There is a laundry list of negatives for Slokar. The first part of his name is perfect for him, he is very SLOW. He got beat down the court time after time by Marcus Douthit. I'm not talking one or two steps, I'm talking a good 5 steps leading to dunks. Defensively he was a nightmare, he was getting tossed around and out hustled by anyone the team put him on.

    - Pape Sow - He got a big cheer since he played at Cal State Fullerton. Again, another player you just stratch your head at and wonder what he's doing in the NBA.

Positives - I feel bad ripping on the guy because he REALLY tries hard and hustles on every play.

Negatives - Hands of stone, he fumbled the ball everytime he got an entry pass. Absolutely, no post moves at all and got swatted by the rim twice and the undersized of the backboard once.

    - Omar Cook - This was the best player on the court today for the Raptors. He didn't take many shots and probably has a crummy stat line, but he was solid on both ends. He directed traffic and got on his teammates if they were out of position. He talks all game long on both ends, and one of the few players to call out screens, backdoor cuts, etc. He tried his best to get his teammates involved offensively. On defense he was very slick coming from the weakside double team to force a few turnovers.

    - Dwayne Barswell - DIRTY player, he almost got into a fight wish Smush Parker after clothes lining him. I'd be surprised if he made the Raptor's NBDL roster.

The rest of the players didn't do much at all, and no one caught my eye. I was looking forward to Utimi, because I read he played well in the other games. However, he was just taking up space on the court in the game.

Appreciate the writeup shape, thanks. Graham sounds like he doesn't feel comfortable offensivley, but at least he is doing what we expect, and that's to be a good defender, leader, and energy guy. Sow's offensive game isn't that great, and we all know that, but he's pure defense and hustle. Slokar, well...at least he could be a servicable player off the bench for offensive needs. He's a 58th pick, so we shouldn't expect too much from him anyway. Nothing surprising about Cook's game. He's solid and I hope he makes the roster. He's one of the few small guys in the league that can play good defense. Again, thanks for the recap, because these SPL sites really suck.

To be honest it was hard to watch them play. The quality was terrible and unorganized. It was so bad, I was too, tired to watch the entire Heat v. Mavs match-up after the Lakers v. Raptors.

It was cool to experience it, but the excitement doesn't last very long. I'd recommend you take advantage of the pre-season games though. In those games, the players are very competitive and more organized. For a lot of the players it's their last chance to make the team so they go all out. The Summer League is more like a scrimmage game.

Of course they are going to be sloppy. What do you expect when they've played 4 games in 4 days with games progressively starting earlier in the day? Whoever made up the summer league schedule should be snubbed. Too bad you couldn't make it to the first game and the second game because that's when the players are fresh and at their best.

EDIT: Wait a minute.. shape you said Slokar looked lost on the floor,, but according to the box score he had 20 points on 6-9 shooting / 7-11 FT and grabbed 10 boards to go along with 3 steals.. if that's looking lost on the floor, I'd take it any day of the year. [IMG]

Like I said, don't just look at the statline and assume someone looks good or bad. Slokar was getting killed on defense, look at Marcus Douthit's numbers. He got a double-double against him and Douthit is a terrible player. Slokar made him look like he's actually capable of playing in the NBA. Also the rebounding numbers are deceiving in this game. Both teams shot a lot of bricks, so there was plenty of rebounds to go around.

Now look at Omar Cook's numbers, you would think he had a bad game, but in fact he was the best player on the court for the Raptors. He initiated easy baskets for his teammates, whether it was the first pass, or the second pass to the open man. It shows he was 0-6, but most of his shots were a result of shooting with 2 or 3 seconds left on the shot clock. He only took two actual shots, one was a missed layup, which was contested by Smush Parker, and one was a midrange jumper.

lol AirJordan, he's a new member who was advertising something or other and will never post again in the Raptors forum or JBB... except under another alias and will advertise something else or spam somewhere else.

Thanks Shape for the write up, I'm sorry for you that the game was a bummer, it might have been better if CV was there. He seemed to do well in both games so far. BTW, how was Bynum? and any pictures?

Also, in a previous post you talked of CV's being dysfunctional, I'm interested into hearing about your reasoning.

We aren't exactly looking for defensive help in Slokar if he indeed is signed. He will play a similar role to Matt Bonner and I think Slokar just has much more potential than Bonner with the same shooting ability / range and rebounding ability. Bonner wasn't brought in for defense, he was brought in to provide points and rebounds off the bench. You gotta remember that Slokar was picked 58th, and he certainly will not be someone that can do everything.

As for Omar Cook, I'm a believer in him because he's shown that he can lead a team and that he's a pass-first point guard with ability to play decent defense.

On a side note, Andrew Bynum with 5 rebounds and no blocked shots in 30+ minutes doesn't sound good at all..

I don't think that Shape was trying to say bad things about the Raptor's players, he gave a positive and negative look on each player.

Bonner hustles a lot on defense and gives a lot of the little things. He tries hard on D. Bonner may not have been brought in for defense, but he puts his share of it in.

I agree that because SlowCar was picked 58th that there shouldn't be high expectations or the same criticism that a 1st rounder receives.

Everyone expects Bynum to be a project, so an unrefined 17 year old with probably no good post moves and slow footwork will probably have mediocre results against players who are 3 to 7 years older than him.

Joey Graham did seem to shoot too many jumpers as he shot 3-12 and the Raptors as a whole shot 31.3%. Lakers shot 39.4% it sounds like a pretty ugly sounding game.
