The acumen grew with his high-flying antics for the Commonwealth's favorite 'Cats at the arena named for the legendary Adolph Rupp.

He did postgraduate work as a pro over four NBA stops, though his career was knocked off track by injuries.

"Basketball is the only thing I know," Rex Chapman said.

The lifelong student of the game might next impart his wisdom on the Timberwolves as a talent evaluator. He is expected to be hired in the coming weeks, though his exact title and duties are to be determined.

He is already at work, though.

Vice president of basketball operations Kevin McHale hired Chapman as a consultant for last week's NBA draft. Chapman remained in the Twin Cities after the draft, helping the team with preliminary work in free agency, and making phone calls to agents.

Chapman spent the Fourth of July weekend in Phoenix with his family, but he returns to Minnesota this week. He plans to assist with the summer league July 15-19 at Target Center.

Those close to Chapman say he has a high basketball IQ.

"I do think it's a good fit because I think Rex would really complement Kevin and Kevin's personality," said Boston Celtics executive director of basketball operations Danny Ainge, who coached Chapman in Phoenix and played with McHale in Boston. "Rex has a very strong opinion of some players, and he's very confident in his abilities."</div>
