<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Las Vegas -- Only a few minutes passed Sunday before Andris Biedrins and Zarko Cabarkapa went from lifting weights to trying to gain weight.

The two had just finished working out at a local gym when Biedrins handed his teammate two cartons of "Muscle Milk." The chocolate blend bills itself as a fat burner, and though neither has much flab to pinch, both would love more muscles to flex.

"We need some big guys on our team," Cabarkapa said.

Biedrins (6-foot-11) weighs 240 pounds, and Cabarkapa (also 6-11) weighs 232. They want to push the scales as much as possible this summer, because as passe as the phrase "bigger, stronger, faster" is, getting better is not.

Getting better is how to push starters Adonal Foyle, Troy Murphy and Mike Dunleavy for playing time. Getting better is how to keep ahead of draft picks Ike Diogu and Chris Taft.

So far, the results have been mixed. Warriors summer-league coach Mario Elie said he was disappointed with the play of his veterans following Friday's opener against Portland. Biedrins and Cabarkapa combined for 16 points, nine rebounds, nine fouls and six turnovers.

Cabarkapa responded with 15 points against Cleveland the following night, but committed six turnovers. Biedrins had four points, two rebounds and three turnovers in 15 minutes.

Not exactly sparkling numbers from actual Warriors.

On a summer-league squad consisting of draft picks and free agents, Cabarkapa is the elder statesman by default. Ray Young, Marque Perry and Damir Miljkovic are older, but none has any NBA experience.

Cabarkapa, 24, said he feels obliged to be a team leader with two years under his waistband. To be an effective one, he knows heneeds to help himself first.

"I have to step up," Cabarkapa said. "The first two games, I didn't do well. We had 25 turnovers, I had six turnovers -- it's unbelievable. But we will get better." </div>
