Quote:

MIAMI -- With work on Shaquille O'Neal's multiyear deal to stay in Miami progressing nicely, the Heat have completed another of their top offseason tasks. Starting power forward Udonis Haslem -- a Miami native who wanted to stay in his hometown so badly that he apparently turned down more lucrative offers from other clubs -- has agreed to a five-year contract that could be worth in the range of $33 million to $34 million, his agent, Jason Levien said. The exact amount of the deal, which cannot be signed until at least July 22, won't be known for a few more days. Haslem will receive $5.5 million next season and then a 10.5 percent raise in each subsequent year.
Source For future reference, do not post the whole article. ~ Banks
YES!!!! we needed to do this and we did. I love the love Haslem has for this city and he is loyal to our team no matter the money.
Good move for the Heat. I still think that $7 million per season for Haslem is a bit overpaying, but then everybody else - like Bobby Simmons getting $47 million deal - is cashing in... So you guys got Haslem for $7 million,, Shaq is close to signing a $25 million a season contract, and Wade's agent probably won't let him sign for anything less than $10 million a season.. There's $42 million.. with the salary cap to be set around $50 million for next season, I sure hope Riley knows what he's doing.
Good deal, its cool how he turned down other places to stay in MIA. That shows loyalty and dedication something the league can use a lot more of.
Much respect to Haslem for sticking by his word. I think he was paid fair value in comparison to a lot of other PFs in the league. The Heat's frontline is going to be even better next season and this signing allows them to compete with Big Ben, Sheed, and McDyess now. The key now will be Shaq's deal, to see if the Heat have some money left to add some guards.
To Vinkannady...Wade is going to get a max contract. Anyways, I'm not surprised by this deal. It's a good deal to keep Haslem because it solidifies our PF spot for a while at a good price. 7 Million for a double double and more is right around what Haslem should get in this market. Although I would've prefer something around 6 million a year, in this years market, with the money Gadzuric, Simmons, Hughes and company are getting, this deal is what Haslem is worth. This looks good in the long run because when teams realize that their aren't many double double bigs out there, and when the Heat need to fill certain posistions out, then Haslem could be expendable inable to fill any needs that the Heat have. All in all...this deal was fair one for both sides.

Udonis will not regret this decision. Nice to see a player making the right choice instead of chassing the money This frees up money to use on a point guard. HEAT COMING STRONG IN 2006
