<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The Seattle SuperSonics are on the verge of naming Bob Weiss their new head coach. An announcement could come as early as today, according to sources. Weiss has been offered a contract, though no details were available. The team was waiting for Weiss to sign. Weiss would replace Nate McMillan, who left unexpectedly July 6 to accept an offer to coach the Portland Trail Blazers. Sources said the delay in naming a replacement was because principal owner Howard Schultz was out of the country. An assistant with the Sonics since 1994, Weiss has been endorsed by key players, including Ray Allen. Weiss was a player on the original Sonics, coming to the team in the expansion draft of 1967.</div> http://www.thenewstribune.com/sports/sonic...p-4588979c.html Meh, works for me.
All in all, I think it's good too, if for nothing else than some semblance of continuity. We need a top flight assistant now.
Can't complain at all. Matter fact, this is what I wanted. He'll come cheap and is familiar w/ all of the returning players. I also don't think that, given his age, he'll coddle Ray Allen, either. Weiss hasn't had success as a head coach, but he's also had sh*t teams (outside of the Blaylock/Smitty led Atlanta Hawks). He doesn't look like the type to be scared of risks, and I know for certain he is a big fan of Flip's. The new era of Sonics basketball begins. Do you think that Dean Demopolous is going to rescind on his Portland offer now, too?
I like the fact that, with such a young core in Luke, Nick and Casanova, we've gone for someone already familiar to the franchise. I get the feeling he may even be filling in until the time Jack Sikma is ready to take over, but without wanting to speculate too much, I think it is a very solid choice. He knows the players and all their habits, and vice versa.
While being interviewed on the local sports network, Weiss said he was going to keep the same style of play, but with slight differences (the only one he mentioned was running more). He also that he was hired because he was familiar with the system and that he thought Luke was ready for more responsibility (seemed like he was talking about Luke being the Nash/Kidd for the Sonics on the break).
From today's Times: <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">"Nate went full bore," Weiss said. "He carried it with him all the time. I'm a little easier going. Nate was a very demanding guy, but I'll also be demanding in a little different way. I might even be a little more short-tempered about certain kinds of mistakes. "If we continue to miss defensive assignments, I may jerk a player quicker than Nate would sometimes. Turnovers and shots that are missed ? those things don't bother me. That's part of the game. But if there's things that I think they should focus on and they can't remember them, then maybe coming out of the game might help them remember."</div> So Sheik was right, he does like Flip
