It's time for three of the 76ers' young prospects to take another step in their development. To that end, second-round draft choice Louis Williams and undrafted free agents Shavlik Randoph and Deng Gai are scheduled to leave Sunday for a series of skills sessions in Las Vegas.

The sessions will be directed by longtime NBA assistant Tim Grgurich, but are not operated by the league or the Sixers. The Sixers' Willie Green and Andre Iguodala attended last summer's sessions.

"Players have been doing this on their own for several years," Sixers assistant general manager Tony DiLeo saod. "But there's no official affiliation with the league or with us. It's similar to the big-man camps that many players attend."

Randoph, from Duke, and Gai, from Fairfield, have been in town working out and are expected to sign contracts with the Sixers when the league's moratorium expires next week. The moratorium, in place as the league and union finalize details of a new collective bargaining agreement, originally was expected to end July 22.</div>

Go look up Deng Gai's stats. Undrafted, but he seems solid. He played for a pretty small college but averaged 14 9 and 5.5 BPG [IMG] !

The only name the 76ers should be estatic about in that article is Tim Grgurich. I was hoping the Lakers could snag him, because he is one of the best coaches out there when it comes to strength and conditioning. Having him on the 76ers staff is BIG NEWS.

    Here's a quote about him ...

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">"There have been two major forces in the development of players and coaches over the last 20 years: Pete Newell and Tim Grgurich," said Indiana Pacers coach Rick Carlisle, who has worked at the Grgurich camp for the past three years and at the Newell camp for seven years. "The irony is that in this day and age of marketing and self-promotion, neither Pete nor Tim would ever want any publicity for what they do or the part they've played.</div>

Geez, those are some pretty nice numbers, maybe he'll get a good look.

And from what you said shape, that Grugrich guy sounds like a great coach, thanks for the heads up on that one. [IMG]

Good news, I guess. Like your title suggests, it small.

Regarding Gai, I don't really watch college ball that much, but we shouldn't expect too much from him. He played at a small college like you said and doesn't look like he could be too big of an offensive player. From his stats at college, he seems to be a solid defensive player- boxing out, rebounding, and blocking shots, so it might be a good idea to take a chance on him. And about Tim- good news!

    Here's some news on Tim.
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The Trail Blazers have stopped paying Tim Grgurich, the latest move in an unusual tussle between the team and its one-of-a-kind assistant coach.

Grgurich, who specializes in mentoring and training young players, wants out of the organization. The Blazers say he is breach of contract but are refusing to let him break it. The contract has a year remaining. </div>

Man, from all this stuff about Tim and how great an assistant coach he is, I really want him here now.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Donnie Walsh, chief executive officer of the Indiana Pacers, said he had not heard of a situation such as Grgurich's. But he maintained that the Blazers have a right to hold him to his contract.

"What Grgurich does is different from most coaches," Walsh said. "He works individually with the players. But it doesn't make any difference who the head coach is."

Donn Nelson, president of basketball operations for the Dallas Mavericks, said he understood why the Blazers don't want to lose Grgurich, just as he understood why Grgurich wants to leave.

"Grgs is a throwback in the fact that loyalty is No. 1, 2 and 3 with him," Nelson said. "Loyalty comes in two forms: It comes in loyalty to the organization, and then you've got also loyalty to people. And a coaching staff, that's really your family."

Reached by phone, Grgurich's wife, Kathy, said, "We just have no comment about that at this point in time." Blazers coach Nate McMillan was on a family vacation Friday and unavailable for comment.

The Blazers, who confirmed Friday that the organization is not paying Grgurich, have let others leave prematurely. Earlier this month, they let assistant John Loyer out of his contract two years early, allowing him to work for Cheeks with the Philadelphia 76ers.

But because of the Blazers' investment in young players, Nash said, and because of the strides Grgurich coaxed from them last season, the Blazers want to hold on to him.

"(Loyer) was replaceable," Nash said. "We find Grg to be more unique in his abilities and more valuable to us as a result." </div>

well, i do admit, gai's stats dont look too bad, but remember, he came from a small school, so i wouldnt expect much of him. i see him as being a big body who can block some shots occasionally and grab a couple of boards.
