Walker surprises, reports to Packers camp NFL.com wire reports GREEN BAY, Wis. (July 27, 2005) -- Javon Walker showed up at the Green Bay Packers' training camp in a surprising twist to his push for a new contract. "Tell everybody I'm coming in," Walker told a reporter for The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel at Austin-Strabel airport. Walker wouldn't elaborate on whether there had been any change in his contract status. A team official who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity confirmed Walker had reported to camp for the veterans' 7 p.m. mandatory meeting. Players will undergo physicals July 28 and the first full day of training camp is July 29. Agent Drew Rosenhaus, who said last week Walker would hold out in his effort to have his contract renegotiated, did not return phone calls from the AP. Walker skipped all the Packers' offseason workouts after hiring Rosenhaus to renegotiate his contract, which has two years remaining and calls for him to make $515,000 this season. Last week, Rosenhaus said the Packers informed him they had no intention of trading Walker, redoing his deal or even committing to a renegotiation down the road. Despite being the Packers' top receiver, Walker's threatened holdout drew the ire of Brett Favre, who got into a public dispute with Rosenhaus by saying he hoped the Packers wouldn't give in to Walker's demands. Favre suggested that players with several years left on their contract should honor their deal, and if they want a raise, they should go about it behind the scenes and not hold out. Rosenhaus responded by suggesting Favre give him a call to "get all the facts," something Favre said was unnecessary.
never mind just heard something. hey good thing my feeling was wrong. happy to hear him there and that is great news. More problems for Drew Rosenhaus. hahahaha
Walker deserves more money, but it is good that he is reporting to camp. Hopefully he gets a new contract during training camp
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (panthersare#1)</div><div class='quotemain'>Walker deserves more money, but it is good that he is reporting to camp. I think he will get a new deal after this season is over.
hopefully players drop Drew and find new agents. Players know that most teams wont give in to holdouts, and holdouts are drew's philiosphy
Hopefully he'llcome in play his heart out, and then maybe by mid season he will get his extension, once he shows he's no one hit wonder and that he's ready to play for a pay day.
he should make a deal with sherman that if he leads the team in REC that he should get a new deal. Why is Bubba Franks still unsigned?
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (porky88)</div><div class='quotemain'>yea maybe it was a good thing that Favre spoke out and Walker relized whats best.</div> The Ten Million Dollar Man just cost his teammate a raise. There's a reason to be proud.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (panthersare#1)</div><div class='quotemain'>Walker deserves more money, but it is good that he is reporting to camp. Favre has been here for along time and before you start talken like you know what was going on in Green Bay. Hear me out. Javon Walker had a 0% chance of getting a new contract this season. Next year I bet he does because Green Bay usually gives you a new contract if you outplayed it and you have 1 year left. Walker at the end of this season will have 1 year left.

However, I know that even if Jevon Walker catches 90 balls for 1,300 yards, if he gets hurts at the end of the season then he won't get a new contract. I know that every Packers player has seen that when the line is drawn between the front office and the players, Big Bucks Favre sides with the front office. YOU say that Walker had a 0% chance of getting a new contract, but I don't agree. I understand your point about the Packers, historically, not renegotiating contracts at this point, but sometimes circumstances changes things. Beyond Donald Driver, I see a weak, unexperienced and unproven group of WRs that would make any time missed by Driver a disaster. If (heaven forbid) Driver had to miss anytime and no one else could step up, then how much pressure would there be to get Walker back on the field. You can brush that off as an "if" but it's a legitimate "if" and one that I bet the Packers front office has discussed.
Dam you don't have to get all pissed about. look at Mike McKenzie. He played the posistion of our main weakness last season and he ended up loosing money. Yes if he gets hurt he probably won't get the contract but again IF. Do you come into the season believing your gonna get hurt if your JAvon Walker. No!! You come in thinking your gonna catch 90 passes for 1500 yards. The Packers sent him a letter saying they won't trade him or give him a new contract while he has 2 years left on his contract. You seem to go into the season thinking players are gonna get hurt. Heaven forbid if somehow you become a GM because you would suck at it. nothing against you again but coming into the season with negative thoughts about injuries is not the way to handle a contract. Walker is doing the right thing and he knows about it. Favre not necessarly did whats best for Walker and himself(because it's people like you taking cheap shots at him) but he did whats best for the team. Walker is now at camp and ready to work. That is all that we need to know and as a "football guardian" I suggest you let them move on and let the "whores of media" take care of the snooping around for info on why he reported.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Eagles4Life)</div><div class='quotemain'>I bet the Packers will give him a new contract before week 8 of the season.</div> If he is performing great he has a great chance. I think they will handle it like they handled Robert Ferguson's contract last year. Except Walker is gonna get payed a lot more money.

I would be a great GM. Since I read that the Packers have some cap room, I would call in Rosenhaus and Jevon Walker and lay out what I could do for them this year and what I could do for the next year if Walker has another good year. Common sense suggesting that I could do a lot more for them next year if Jevon produces well again. I wouldn't spend money foolishly, but I would show some flexibility and a concern for players in hopes that it would help engender loyalty. If your totally inflexible, especially when players know that you have room to be flexible, then you might get a player to play but perhaps fail to get them to play with heart. Why would a player go all out for a GM that is more devoted to his rules than their futures? If Big Bucks Favre can't take it, then he shouldn't dish it out. As for what's best for the team, only his teammates can tell us if they still trust him now that sticking his nose in their contract matters. You only take exception to my "Guardian of Football" title because when you look into the eyes of the whores of media, you see how much they fear the truth of my words and you wish your kung-fu was that strong. Hiiiiiiiiii-yahhhhhhhhhhh, young grasshappa!!!! Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii-yahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Why is Bubba Franks still unsigned?</div> He wants a long term deal and wants to be paid in the same league as Tony Gonzalez and Todd Heap. As for Walker, I'm glad he's in camp. I just hope Grady Jackson follows suit. If Walker has, say, 40 or 50 grabs by mid-season, I can TOTALLY see them giving him a new contract/contract extension. But there is NO WAY he's going to get a new contract before the start of the season. That would set a bad precedent for the team and soon EVERYONE would be lining up outside Ted Thompson's office.
Bubba Franks has lost his mind. His typically gets about 35 recs a year and he wants Tony Gonzales type of money? That's silly.
Well...in his mind, it's because the Packers are using him as a blocker and not a receiver. He has a point, too. He's nowhere near as good as TG, obviously, but receptions alone probably shouldn't determine his contract. They really don't throw the ball his way much. When they do, he almost always catches it. I think the Packers should offer him AT LEAST a three year deal.
