<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">MIAMI -- Shaquille O'Neal and the Miami Heat agreed Tuesday on a $100 million, five-year contract, one that presumably will keep the 12-time All-Star center playing past his 38th birthday. The deal will be signed later Tuesday, said O'Neal's agent Perry Rogers. "We wanted to make sure that Shaquille was being compensated well into his career," Rogers told The Associated Press. "We also wanted to make sure he was paid his value. And it was important the Heat had flexibility they need in the short-term to win a championship. "It's about winning."</div> Shaq signs for 5 years
This was expected, im glad hes staying but 5 years i wonder in what shape hell be throughout the 4th or 5th year.
I would've signed him to a 3 year 60 Million contract rather than 5 years 100 Million. 5 years is just too long for him, and I don't think he'll be worth his contract in 5 years.
So they plan on paying Shaq 20 million dollars a year when he reaches the age of 37-38. This could ultimately end up being one of the worst deals in NBA history. Though Shaq is the most dominant player ever to play this game. Will we be able to man handle people when he is at that age?
-Rant on Shaq- Call it bitterness or jealously or whatever, but this deal blows my mind and I have lost complete respect for Shaq, eventhough he's doing the right thing and helping his team (sort of.) I'm upset, because he cried about the Lakers not extending him and paying him what he's worth. He continued on and on about the money all season long, and went as far as to say, "I'm not excepting anything less than a max deal." "I won't take a paycut." Now Shaq takes a tremendous paycut, to help out the Heat. Something he was not willing to do when he was with the Lakers, plus he works his butt off to get in shape in the off-season. I don't understand how he can slam the Laker organization for not paying him and then turnaround and take a paycut? Let's do some math, Shaq will be making $100M for the next 5 years. The Lakers offered an opening extension of 2 years worth $75M + paying out the final $30M on his current contract. So Shaq would have made $105M in 3 years, which is more money in a shorter time span. Shaq you are the biggest hypocrite in the NBA, and complete jackass. That dig on Garnett was completely uncalled for as well. - End of Rant - This helps Miami tremendously in the short term, because they can spend on a bench to get the franchise a championship. 5 years is a long time to extend Shaq, but it's worth the risk if the Heat win a title or two. I believe this deal puts the Heat under the salary cap as well, so it should be interesting who they target. I wonder if this move effects any of the other pending deals that players signed, since most are not official yet.
You guys know this doesn't put the Heat over the cap, this move actually was a deal because initially Shaq wanted around 23-25 million a year.

Now, before Laker fans jump on me, hear me out, Kobe didn't do anything to force Shaq out, but it was just a fact Shaq didn't like him. I think no matter how much money you could give him, he wanted to leave because of Kobe. I'm not sure if it was because Kobe tried to rat him out to police, or just because Shaq was jealous because Kobe was going to eventually be the leader of the team, and Shaq didn't want to play second fiddle to him, I don't know, but he just hated for Kobe for some reason. I don't think it was right of Shaq to ask for a trade, go to Miami, get in better shape than he ever was in LA, and keep dissing the Lakers and Kobe every 2 weeks, but it's what he did.
screw shaq, the lakers won't need him when they have phil, kobe and odom and thats still an ugly ass contract. he'll just get an injury somewhere in the season. this is not the shaq in his prime. this is the shaq that has to take a breath everytime going down the court. this is the guy that had problems in LA, not kobe. *i smell flaming*

It's ok to be frustrated with the Lakers being worse than the Clippers this year.

I don't see how this is a bad deal if it bring the Heat a title or two, which is really possibility. 20 million a year for a 33 year old Shaq seems like a lot (and it is), however, I'm sure the Heat will feel good at the end of his contract knowing that they did the right thing in order to win a couple of 'ships and stay among the elite in the NBA. If the Heat didn't do this deal (there was no doubt that they would), then you lose Shaq to Free agency, leaving the Heat roster and organization with huge question marks.

I really think it burns down to happiness. Shaq was thinking, the only way I would stay with a guy I don't like, is if they pay me an incredibly large amount of money. In Miami, its a totally different scenario, now its. I'm grateful to be on a team with my good friend Wade, what sacrifices should I make to remain happy, have a chance for a championship, and play with all my buddies. <div class="quote_poster">Quoting Best Kept Secret:</div><div class="quote_post"> So they plan on paying Shaq 20 million dollars a year when he reaches the age of 37-38. He is also a leader, and has a monumental impact on both sides of the floor. At 20 mill its definitely worth it. Also the Heat will now know that they are devoted to winning it all over the next 5 years, so they will have the green light to spend on good FAs.
