<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">One is the undisputed czar on the Grizzlies' bench. The other is an emerging go-to guy on the court.

Together, coach Mike Fratello and power forward Pau Gasol share responsibility for guiding the Grizzlies. They are in sync, too, with their opinions about where the team is headed.

A day after the team jettisoned Bonzi Wells, Jason Williams and James Posey in two separate trades, Fratello and Gasol responded by putting a stamp of approval on the deals.

"Due to issues that the team had at the end of the season, the team needed changes," Gasol said Wednesday in a telephone interview from his native Spain. "We're getting very good players with a lot of experience. We need veterans that can help us during the last stretch of the season and in the playoffs."

Sending Wells to Sacramento brought the Griz 32-year-old point guard Bobby Jackson.

The Griz then essentially netted 11-year swingman Eddie Jones from Miami as part of a five-team, 13-player transaction ?- the largest trade in NBA history.

With the Griz expected to announce the addition of 31-year-old point guard Damon Stoudamire today, Fratello insisted that FedExForum would be the home of a competitive and savvy basketball team.

Putting age aside, the Griz acquired proven talent and won't rely as much on potential.

"When you look at Pau, Shane (Battier) and Mike (Miller), we're young. Now, you put in veteran guys who have been in big games and that's a big deal," Fratello said. "I like my nucleus. I like this team. I like that they are solid guys. You can count on them. ...When we take the floor, fans will understand that we have a good product." </div>

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting 02civic:</div><div class="quote_post">I dont have to no. But its just that when some people, the type that read something and accept it as fact without thinking about it, when they here someone refer to Babcock in that mannor they remember it. And then they start saying it, and then someone else does when its not true, its just the "popular" thing to say. There are alot of teams that havent been winning for along time, and these GM's have made some very questionable moves, but most people dont refer to them in the same manor. Hell i hear Babcock jokes 10x more often than Isiah jokes and that guy wins less games with twice the budget.
But i'll just let it go and when people see things were for the best they'll pretend like they knew it was the right move from the beginning.</div>

I can say with complete honesty that I make fun of Isiah just as much. I will now laugh at this Twardzick fellow, because his is stupid too. I will crack jokes about Billy Knight, just like I always have, I will even consitently make fun of Kevin McHale (yes, I'm a C's fan, yes he hasn't been that bad, it's just the incredible resigning shame he seems to take every bad deal with); Rob Babcock is also a moron. I don't think the VC deal was a bad one. In fact, I think it will work out well for them in the end. Being a UConn fan, I have to say, when Charlie announced he was entering the draft, I worried about him being a first round pick, if he was drafted at all. He has played fine basketball for the University of Connecticut, but I had no question he wasn't ready for the NBA. When I jumped online and saw a ticker that said he took Villanueva, I almost crapped my pants. I laughed for a while, and then said to myself that he must be trying to flood the cellar of the Atlantic division. Laughing amongst my friends and I ensued, and then we went on. Babcock is a draft day dud. Oh well. The point is, we didn't make a big deal of it, we laughed, we realized he wasn't planning for next season, and we dropped it. I think it may be time to do the same civic.

They could have taken Charlie with a second round pick, and not had to worry one bit. I can say without fear of contradiction that Villanueva will contribute nothing to the Raptors next season, and feel bad that Matt Bonner lost his roster spot to him. Bonner could have played a much bigger role if Babcock had eyes for some other talented fellow in the first round (Granger, Green, any number of others). But a draft promise is a promise, and it seems obvious that Babcock must have been held to one.

Why make jokes about Billy Knight? He's the greatest General Manager that Memphis has seen; a lot better than Jerry West.

Do you remember when he traded away our franchise player for an unknown Spanish rookie and a bunch of throw-ins? The criticsm wouldn't stop. Now we look back at that deal, and we see what a steal it was. Our so-called 'franchise player', Shareef Abdur-Rahim, has been exposed as being overpaid and overrated, while that Spanish rookie, Pau Gasol, has ended up being one of the top forwards in the league. The throw-ins ammounted to our current starting Center, Lorenzen Wright, as well as Brevin Knight and Wesley Person, who ended up turning into Bonzi Wells.

So with that said, I want to give him more time in Atlanta. He personally molded the Grizzlies from a 32 win team into a 50 win team (although Jerry stole the credit). It just took a little time and patience. I trust the direction he's going in with the Hawks 100%.

Wouldn't you know it? I stand corrected. I did not know of his track record with the Grizz, and will fully retract my statement.

The trade West did makes this Grizz team mediocore at best. It wouldn't surprise me that the Grizz don't make the playoffs in 2006.
