Hey guys, are the rockets eligible to use the amnesty clause to release any of their players in the current roster? If so, who should be released? Whetherspoon? Norris? Baker? Ward?
any team can use it as long as that player was in contract before august 1st.. and you cant cut players off of your payroll that have left the team in some other instance ( matt mahloney). The deadline for cutting contracts using this clause will be august 15th and all it does is provide luxury tax relief.. not salary cap relief.
It would be stupid to release any of those guy above- they are still pretty valuable as expiring contracts. Anyways, I wouldn't advise the Houston organization to use the Amnesty Clause on anyone at this point. No one has an overly expensive contract that isn't expiring, and it doesn't relieve salary cap at all, just makes the organization pay off the contract in one lump sum. All it does positively is limiting luxury tax.
If anyone, the Rockets would have used the Amnesty Clause on Mo Taylor if we still had him, but every player right now on the roster has some value and it'd be much wiser to trade them rather than let them walk and give them money instead.
is it just me or does anybody else feel that Aug. 15 will be the day for crucial signings out of the whole offseason?? (crucial meaning will drastically help a team from the get-go...like go deep into the playoffs etc.)...for me, Finely jumping to our team would be considered a major one (also a major slap in the face to Cuban and his little-D mavs )
well, today is the day...even though were in the hunt for Finely (which I highly doubt we could get)...I have a good feeling were gona sign Van Axel (imo Payton would be the best candidate for our pg position).
i dont know...I read somewhere that the Rockets wanted to cut their Luxury Tax for sure....so they are going to have to let go someone using the clause...and the major candidate is Weatherspoon one person that the article did mention as a surprise candidate would be Juwan Howard (which I highly doubt they would but let me tell you the reasoning) they said that they could cut Juwan Howard and pay Finley some money and be able to keep an option open for another Free agent..... also Rockets are looking to sign Lonny Baxter because of his summer play...just thought I throw that out there.... I want Nicky...lol....cause I like him and his free throw shooting xP
I think Weatherspoon, Moochie and Ward all have trade value...I think the most logical cut would be baker...

He would not blink at the cost of doing basketball business and especially would spend for stars, but he wouldn't pay the NBA's luxury tax if he could help it. Today, he can help it ? and he just might. Facing the deadline to cut a player to take advantage of the NBA's new, one-time luxury-tax amnesty offer, the Rockets will weigh today whom they could cut to gain an extra roster spot and the tax savings.</div> Source I agree, Baker seems to be the most logical cut for us. He's hasn't played for us at all, or so I remember, and he opted for his player option earlier this offseason.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting blueracer:</div><div class="quote_post">Weatherspoon was the one who was waived this evening by the Rockets.</div> Trade bait my Azz...you guys made such a big deal about expiring contracts. Weatherspoon wasn't worth shizz, even as an expiring contract. You guys also blew up that fact that we needed a point guard. We needed one when Sura was injured and we had to use Strickland. Now Sura is healthy, and we have Head and James. Basically I watched this forum trip about our severe need for a Point Guard, and in the back of my head I was like, are we really secure in our SG/SF positions? Well that thread about the SG/SF problem that was made already exlpains this topic. Iunno, it seems this forum is to (hmmmm I cant think of a word that means when everybody thinks alike/similar) well yea. Sorry for being a B***H in this post, but I had to get that out.
But I thought you guys said that he has trade value because of his expiring contract. So how is this a good move?
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Trade bait my Azz...you guys made such a big deal about expiring contracts. Weatherspoon wasn't worth shizz, even as an expiring contract.</div> I don't want to fit into the stereotype or anything but the truth is, expiring contracts in general are worth alot. They have a lot of trade value because it means that the very next season it would load off a lot of cap space if you trade for them. Say, you trade Weatherspoon for Malik Rose. Both have expensive contracts but Rose's is around 3 years or something like that. I'd say Rose is much better as a player than Weatherspoon at this point. Thus, it would save a lot of cap space for the Knicks next season if they did this trade and if they were actually under the salary cap, they would be able to sign a quality free agent. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">But I thought you guys said that he has trade value because of his expiring contract. So how is this a good move?</div> Weatherspoon wasn't only valuable as a trade bait, but also because his contract was expiring next season. By using the Amnesty Clause, we buy out Weatherspoon's contract (which we would have had to pay anyway) in full, next offseason we would be rid of his contract on the team salary since it was expiring, and we save about five million dollars by avoiding the luxury tax.

Last season, a guy like Keith Van Horn was traded for two mediocre veterans because the two players had expiring contracts. A team like New York who are willing to free up cap space would probably have been willing to trade a pick for Weatherspoon. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Iunno, it seems this forum is to (hmmmm I cant think of a word that means when everybody thinks alike/similar) well yea. I don't know about you but I certainly won't want to see a forum where everyone is out for blood against each other.
