hey, What do you guys think about JVG. Is he a good coach? Is he defensive orrinated or offensive? Personally, I don't really like JVG. He gives Yao 32 mins. a game. Yes, I know Yao needs to get better conditioning, but if his conditioning is so bad, why did he play like 38-40 mins/game when T-Mac was injuried during the regular season. Not to mention his stats were way up. Another reason I dont like having JVG, is because he doesnt make the best decisions IMO. Example, when Jim Jackson was with us, JVG let him play like 41/42 mins. per game (cant remeber stat, but it was 40+), it was like .1 or .2 away from T-Mac's average. Believe me Jim Jackson was a pretty good player, but not a 40 min star. If Yao played that much, he would easily be a 20/10 big man. This is my opinion though....
-Yao cant play alot of minutes because he isnt in great shape and he gets into foul trouble alot. It has nothing to do with JVG not letting him play. -JJ is in great condition and was the most consistent player for the Rockets. When a player can consistently play his role there is no reason to take him out.
I didn't thik much of JVG when we first got him, but he's a real good coach. I too disagree with how he used Yao, especially in the playoffs. Overrall, I have a tremendous amount of respect for Van Gundy. He's a totally different coach than Rudy was, but both get instant results. At first I worried that his negative attitude wouldn't fit with Tmac, but I was wrong. Tmac loves Van Gundy and Houston!!
i like JVG as a coach he is brilliant. Sure jimmy jackson wasn't a superstar but he did what we needed in the time he was on the court. Yao has improved dramatically now that he has both JVG and tmac to push him. When we had franchise and mobley we were one of the top 3 defensive teams in the league. This will soon happen again if we can get some quicker guards. The difference this time around is that we will have more consistent offensive weapons. much respect to JVG as a coach. I still can't help thinking of JVG as the guy that broke up a fight by hanging on to the leg of a player and nearly being trampled!

He truely understands the game of basketball and knows what it takes to get the right results. He is a throw-back coach to the old days, he wants the game played the right way, defense first and solid half court offense. But with that being said he is willing to adapt to the style of play that now dominates the nba, the fast break. That's why Sromile was such a good pick up for the Rockets. Does anybody remember listening to JVG when he was a color commentator, he made Hubbie Brown sound like a junior high school coach. I truely don't believe that there is a better coach out there suited to fit the Rockets. Just listen to what the players say about him, namely Mr. McGrady. They all have respect for him and understands what he is asking them to do. A championship is awaiting the Rockets in the near future.
Jeff Van Gundy is probably the best defensive coach in the league. Last year, the rockets were one of the best defensive teams. But wha'ts most impressive, he did it without a single good defensive player in the starting lineup. Unfortunately, i think he is the worst offensive coach in the league. He is so boring, and his offenses are so predictable. Most of all, i dont' think he uses Yao Ming properly. Yao should be taking at least 15 shots a game. The offense should run through him to set up others, so he should average many more assists a game also. The only reason the Rockets could still score last year, was because JVG had Tmac.

I think it would be great if we could acquire an assistant coach who is great with offense to help JVG out. I don't know much about assistant coaches though.

If you watch Rockets' games, there are lots of times where Yao has 2 fouls in the first quarter or 3 fouls before the 1st half is over. It's not JVG's fault if Yao has limited minutes. In fact he always try to complain to the game officials about the way Yao's games has been handled(see also the $150thou fine). He also convinced them to be fair on big men like Yao and the likes on Shaq. If you look at some games you'll gonna see quick small guards and forwards trying to bang and push Yao when they are driving to the hoops and when they hit Yao the refs will call a foul on Yao eventhough it looks like an offensive foul from the opposing player. For me JVG is a good coach. Early in the season the Rockets' games were boring because their plays are predictable and they play slow. After the trades and with Sura's recovery they started scoring high and JVG was'nt opposed to that as long as they still play good defense which resulted on being second or third in the league in defense.
I love JVG as a coach...he preaches defense and teamwork....I think he's loyal and really stands up for his team and players...He demands the most and expects nothing less, and he's a perfectionist who takes his job and winning seriously...I cant think of anyone else I'd want as head coach for this team, not even Larry Brown or Phil jackson...
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">not even Larry Brown or Phil jackson...</div> actually phil jackson would be pretty good for us
phil would be great for us and we would be great for him. He could help us win a championship really quickly but i think that JVG can get us there also. I like how blunt JVG is with the media and how he doesn't take **** from anyone. IMO phil lost some credibility after dissing kobe then going back to LA.
Phil has shown to leak info that stay behind closed doors...he's even attacked players towards the public before...I believe he only wants whats good for himself whereas JVG wants whats best for the team...
Phil might be the better coach, but only slightly. All the negative intangibles that Phil brings (leaking confidential team info, writing a book about his disgruntleness towards his star player, attacking players in public, sleeping with your GM's daughter, etc etc..) just outweighs the positives IMO. I'd go with JVG in a heartbeat. However he should really consider getting an offense-oriented coach assistant though.
Van Gundy opened up on offense in the middle of last season and I'll be excited to see what that new offense would do for our team for a full season. If we take advantage of the pick and roll with Yao and McGrady even more effectively, we could be scoring 97 a game and letting in just 91.
