I posted this article awhile ago before Shareef was supposedly traded to New Jersey. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Magic interested in talking to Abdur-Rahim July 7, 2005 BY JOHN DENTON FLORIDA TODAY The Orlando Magic have shown an interest in acquiring free-agent forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim, but it seems as if the odds of that happening are slim. Abdur-Rahim's agent, Aaron Goodwin, said that he was unsure how his client would fit in Orlando because the Magic already have Dwight Howard entrenched at power forward. Goodwin, one of the NBA's most powerful agents, also represents Howard. "It really depends on how they would use Shareef, but he's a (power forward) and Dwight is a (power forward) too," noted Goodwin, who said the Magic made preliminary calls about Abdur-Rahim last week. "I don't really envision Dwight playing (center) and Shareef is definitely a player who should be coming off the bench. We'll just have to see how it plays out." The Magic are eager to find more low-post scoring, but they have only their middle-class exception (approximately $5.1 million) to offer free agents. To get Abdur-Rahim, who made $14 million last season while averaging 16.8 points and 7.3 rebounds a game, the Magic would likely have to execute a sign-and-trade with Portland. Abdur-Rahim was scheduled to visit the New Jersey Nets on Wednesday and Goodwin said no meetings with the Magic have been discussed. </div> Source Now that the trade didn't go through, is it possible that the Magic can snag SAR from Portland? We were interested before so I don't know why we wouldn't be now. I say we offer them a pick and cash and see if they bite because that was similar to what the Nets offered. We would have a sick lineup if we acquire Shareef and I think we would be bound for the playoffs. PG- Jameer Nelson-Keyon Dooling SG- Steve Francis-Deshawn Stevenson SF- Grant Hill-Hedo Turkoglu PF- Shareef Abdur-Rahim-Tony Battie C- Dwight Howard-Kelvin Cato We would be deep at every position and would be a force in the East. I really hope the Magic make a move for SAR because if he stays healthy, he would be a very productive scorer and rebounder for our team.
He's an unrestricted FA, you don't have to give the Blazers anything. The Nets were trying to work out a S&T to get SAR more money then they could offer with just the MLE. With the latest injury report on SAR, his value has taken a hit, and he might settle for just the MLE, if he's also given a starting role. He would be a great compliment player to Howard, and give the Magic more firepower in the post. If push comes to shove and a S&T is necessary, the Blazers would probably settle for Christie (cap relief) straight up for SAR.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting shapecity:</div><div class="quote_post"> If push comes to shove and a S&T is necessary, the Blazers would probably settle for Christie (cap relief) straight up for SAR.</div> We will most likely have to I believe we spent a majority if not all of our MLE on acquiring Keyon Dooling. We also already waived Christie so we have no rights to him. We also can not resign him since we waived him with the amnesty clause I believe.

The article mentioned the next few days, but I haven't heard anything new on it. If not, maybe the Magic should rethink this move and get on the phones about SAR.
Doug Christie has not officially been waived yet, it was just mentioned that thats what the organization planned on doing. They have untill the 15th to do so. Since he hasnt been waived yet, that means we are still looking around to other teams to try and get something for him, otherwise he would have been released already. As far as "just" offering SAR the 2 million we have left, im sure teams with more money to offer would offer more than 2 million, there were a lot of teams interested in SAR. I would love to see him here, that would largely improve our front court and we could move DH to center. It would be nice to send a pick and christie to portland for shareef. I highly doubt our management does any kind of S&T deal for SAR where DC is included. Firstly, the $8 million DC is making next season is too much for SAR alone. He would have got $38 over 6 years in NJ and that's about the money he should get. Secondly, our management is more eager to save money in terms of luxury tax or looking for contracts that expire together with G. Hill's after the 2006/2007 season. @slickkid If SAR is coming, I don't see why he would settle with a bench role, he would definitely start over Battie. Edit: I forgot my third argument against a S&T deal: I don't want another G. Hill like fiasco. And the other problem I see, just like D. Gooden and J. Howard couldn't play next to each other, I fear that those two, D. Howard and SAR, can't play next to each other.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Coranor:</div><div class="quote_post">If SAR is coming, I don't see why he would settle with a bench role, he would definitely start over Battie.</div> I agree with Coranor. If we brought in Shareef, there is no reason why he would be backing up Battie. He would be given the starting spot or else he probably wouldn't be interested in coming to Orlando. Tony Battie is a pretty good player but he is nowhere as good as Reef. Plus, Battie is better when he is coming off the bench.
[quote name='Best Kept Secret']We will most likely have to I believe we spent a majority if not all of our MLE on acquiring Keyon Dooling.QUOTE] i was under the same impression. is there even a way to pay SAR the money he would want? what other possibilities are out there besides a sign and trade (which i dont see happening)? if the management pulled this one off i would take back every bad comment i've said about them. (maybe not)

(maybe not)</div> We can acquire Shareef several ways. First, through a sign and trade with the Blazers. For this to happen, we would have to send a player or picks over to Portland in return for SAR. Another way would be to sign him with our remaining MLE (Mid Level Exception) which is around $2 million. Each team over the cap gets a $5 million MLE each year and they can use this to add players over the offseason. We used some of our MLE on Keyon Dooling which is why we only have a limited amount of money to spend on SAR. We have a shot at getting Shareef and it all comes down to our general managers to work something out (unfortunately). Hopefully the Magic will get in contact with the Blazers and at least make an attempt to get SAR because he would give us that one extra piece the Magic need to make a run in the playoffs.

Only future can tell. I doubt it. I don't see any longterm strategy behind our management moves. But back to topic, it is highly unlikely that we get Shareef, he seems to be going to the Kings.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Coranor:</div><div class="quote_post">But back to topic, it is highly unlikely that we get Shareef, he seems to be going to the Kings.</div> Yeah the Kings are close to acquiring Shareef. Here is an article about it. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Sacramento Bee - While Shareef Abdur-Rahim's agent, Aaron Goodwin, said there are three teams still in the running, it's clear the Kings remain in front and a deal could be made soon. "We're moving forward to get a deal done with Sacramento," Goodwin said. "We're looking at hopefully getting something done tomorrow (Friday) or Saturday." Goodwin, however, would not call his client King Abdur-Rahim just yet, not surprising since the player was headed to New Jersey until a sign-and-trade with Portland collapsed on Tuesday. "I've been at this 19 years, and a done deal is not a done deal until it's signed," he said. Asked if Abdur-Rahim was more attracted to Sacramento for financial or basketball reasons, Goodwin answered quickly. "It's absolutely for basketball reasons," Goodwin said. "He now walks into a position where he continues to play, and there are no questions about his ability to play. He can play with Mike Bibby, and he gives them a low-post presence." The terms of the potential contract have yet to be settled. The Kings, who are over the salary cap, could use their $5 million mid-level exception for the signing. They could also convince Portland General Manager John Nash to do a sign-and-trade, though Nash has been against the idea in the past.</div> Source
It's official now. The Kings just signed him. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The Sacramento Kings have called a 3:45 p.m. news conference to announce the signing of forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim. The Kings were one of three teams in the running to obtain the coveted power forward, and The Bee reported in its Friday editions that the Kings were the front-runner. Abdur-Rahim earlier appeared headed for New Jersey in a trade with Portland. But New Jersey nixed the deal when Abdur-Rahim failed to pass their physical due to scar tissue in his right knee. He says it's the result of a surgery from his high school days and has not affected his play in the NBA. Terms of the contract were unavailable, but Abdur-Rahim is a marquee name. With his addition, the Kings starting lineup could be Mike Bibby, Bonzi Wells, Peja Stojakovic, Abdur-Rahim and Brad Miller. It would be, on paper at least, one of the more imposing lineups in the Pacific Division.</div> Source So much for that...
