<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">NEW YORK (Ticker) - NBA commissioner David Stern has paved the way for the Atlanta Hawks to remove Steven Belkin as the team's ownership representative - and perhaps acquire Joe Johnson.

Stern submitted an affidavit Thursday giving his approval to the Hawks to replace Belkin as governor, the owner or part owner selected to speak for the team on NBA business matters.

Belkin, who owns 40 percent of the Hawks through Atlanta Spirit LLC, had been blocking the acquisition of Johnson, a swingman on the Phoenix Suns and a restricted free agent. He had alienated fellow owners and Hawks general manager Billy Knight, who are in favor of acquiring the versatile player.

The affidavit was submitted in response to Tuesday's preliminary injunction preventing Belkin's removal granted in Massachusetts Superior Court by Judge Allan van Gestel. The judge concluded that a precondition of any removal was the approval of Stern, who presides over the NBA's Board of Governors.

The Hawks made a formal request to replace Belkin with Michael Gearon, Jr. as the team's governor. That request was made by a majority of the team's Board of Managers. </div>

I think one of his reasons for doing this is that he wants to make Atlanta a more powerfull basketball city (get them to win that is)
