I guess this is because the recent problems with his heart. It's the last year of his contract, and he won't likely play much this year, if at all so it makes sense. However, the Wolves even with their new signings and more (Jaric, Griffin, Skita, Madsen and newer additions) won't be at the luxury tax level, and probably close to 10 million or so under it even if they add a FA (Murray, Evans, Wilkins). I guess they want that extra roster spot, and probably would of waived Hoiberg, amnesty clause or not.
I guess Hoiberg's heart problem was fairly serious, but from reports I heard he was progressing well. If any team picks him up, he seems like a humble good teammate kind of guy, not to mention a solid 3-pt man. I hope he recovers.
Timberwolves owner told him that he feared for him trying to make a comeback to play this year, so this move is probably just away to prevent Hoiberg from trying to comeback and playing later in the season. He probably will be back next year tho...cause Fred did some nice things for the Wolves these last past two seasons...not only shooting but he was pretty good defensively as well.
I don't remember the length of the contract, but I truly believe that this move was to give him time and see if he can come back in a year or two.
