Go to NBA.com and click on "transactions"... For today's date Weatherspoon has been waived. I know that Les is the poorest team owner, but Spoon was our most valuable contract for trade purposes. Do you think it was a good idea?
I'm sure CD tried as hard as he could trading Spoon and seeing what was out there...obviously he saw nothing he liked, so he waived him...now we're about 5 mill under to avoid the luxury tax for next season...I'm shocked he didnt waive Baker but perhaps Baker is getting in shape and trying to make himself a serviceable player...I'd much rather have a healthy Vin than a healthy Spoon anyday...either way, I have complete faith in CD that he did what is in the team's best interests...
I trust CD's judgement....maybe they tried to trade Spoon, but didn't get any worthwhile offers...you never know....I trust CD has got something planned
The best time to trade 'Spoon and his expiring contract would be at the trade deadline (mid-February). I'm surprised the Rockets waived him instead of Moochie. After re-signing Barry and drafting Head, I though Moochie would be the odd man out. Eventhough 'Spoon cannot produce much now, he would have been a nice insurance for Howard and Swift. Neither are durable, and Baker is still a huge question mark. I figured the Rockets would keep 'Spoon until the trade deadline and then pull off a shrewd move to add a missing piece for the post-season.

If it is before the season begins, then I can see why the Rockets would do this as trading Weatherspoon at the trade deadline would still mean that we'd already have paid the luxury tax. Waiving Moochie or Baker would have been more reasonable from a personnel perspective, but I guess it was because Weatherspoon's contract was too big, and the thought of having to pay double his salary because of the tax made us waive him through the Amnesty.

Edit: Just to clarify, any team over $61.7Million in salary to start the season is responsible to pay the luxury tax. Also the combined amount of a player's contract does not count against the luxury tax in one shot, it's spread out each year as the contract dictates. So for Moochie, they would save roughly $4.5M this season and $4.5M the following.
Yeah the move saves us to be about 5 million under the luxury tax for the start of NEXT season, as reported by the Chronicle...
wow 5 million...thats not much to make a difference to my concern...really dont care about it but i guess i would have chosen another person to be waived

With the waiving of Weatherspoon, we are now under the luxury threshold and will not be required to pay the luxury tax this season. We are actually saving about $11 million which could be put to good use elsewhere.
houston_owns_u, the only two players who had salaries large enough to be waived and put Houston under the luxury tax threshold were Tracy McGrady and Clarence Weatherspoon. It's a no brainer.
