yao needs barkley's mentality? barkley is one of the most overrated players ever. its cause of his personality why he is so popular. i would much rather have someone like yao on my team than a barkely. barkley was lazy, immature, n partied too much. with yao, u have someone who tries hard n is dedicated to his game. theres nothin more u can ask.

Barkley wasn't dedicated to the game? At least he played defense. Yao is a pushover who gets dunked on. Barkley wouldn't let that happen, he was a man and either sent the shot sailing into the second row, or sent the guy to the line. And come on! He was a 6-6 (that's an inch taller than Ray Allen, an SG) powerforward who averaged 11.7 RPG! Yao is 7-5 and can only average 8.4 RPG. Don't come in here telling me that Barkley was lazy. He's 15th all time in rebounds, and one of four players to finish his career with 20,000 points, 10,000 rebounds and 4,000 assists...

In the prime of his career? Averaging almost 2 blocks a game? He was no Ben Wallace, but in comparison to Yao, he was a great defender...

Barkley was one of the best to ever play his position. If you do not think so then you did not watch basketball when he played, especially while he played for the Suns.

This Barkley being lazy crap is nonsense. And for a fella who's 7'5", he sures does play like a sally. But let's be honest about that, he doesn't really have a choice. I know that Van Gundy deal at the end of the season was nonsense, but let's look at it logically. The refs do call games differently for different players, and they are so whistle-happy when dealing with Yao, that he has to play off on some games. He really needs to play a little less physically, otherwise there are refs that will see him sit most of a game, and they very obviously have no remorse, because they keep doing it.

I think he is most obviously soft, but there's a reason, especially late in games.

I don't get this thread at all. emmanen, by comparing Yao to Amare Stoudemire, does it mean that Yao has to have better stats than Amare to be "hard"? Why can't you be averaging 18 and 8 and not be soft? What is "soft"? I don't even know what everyone is arguing about here.

Soft is most obviously an objective statement, so yes, it is a vague topic, but anyone can tell from one player to the next, who they consider soft. That's what this thread is about, who thinks what about Yao. I definitely think Yao is a phenomenal player and certainly doesn't have to or want to be Amare Stoudamire to be a tough player inside, but Yao is a bit touchy. As I said before, there is a reason for this.

Nevertheless, this thread was a conversation of opinions, as it is supposed to be, until the bickering started. Let's keep it civil, and we won't have this misunderstanding.

Blocks are by no means an indication of how good or poor of a defender someone is. For instance Amare Stoudamire averaged 2 blocks per game last year but was an atrocious defender.

...Mmmk... I was defending Barkley with that argument. Your post makes no sense.

I understand that, but Barkley wasn't a horrible defender. I can't prove it with stats, but it's my opinion.

Tell that to Shaq............Even though he is a monster, Yao gives Shaq the most problems of any Center in the league. Oh, and averaging 2 blocks a game doesn't make a good defender. Barkley's defense was TERRIBLE, it seems like everybody knows that but you.

Okay, so Barkley is a TERRIBLE defender. Tell me why a guy who is 7-5 can barely average more blocks than a 6-6 Barkley... Pathetic. Yao is a Teddy Bear...

I have seen many many clips where Barkley got dunked on... he really didn't have superb defense like many thought he did. Barkley was an exceptionally good rebounder yes, but defense is definitely not the guy's forte. I don't know which Charley Barkley you're talking about but he definitely didn't average "almost 2 blocks per game" in his prime. The closest he's ever gotten is 1.56bpg..... Not even close to 2bpgs if you ask me.

Anyways, like Ig said, Yao is forced to play softer than normal players would. And although I agree Yao isn't the toughest cat on the block, calling him a "Teddy Bear" is unnecessarily stretching it. I'd say he's a bit on the softer side, but he's no Shawn Bradley for sure. Let's not forget that offense is part of the equation here. I still find it impressive that the guy managed 18/8 shooting at 55% clip while being double teamed and practically mugged down in the paint. Have you ever played a full game where you get mugged everytime you step on the paint? It's not that easy... It's especially hard for big men over 7 feet tall because of the obvious stamina issue.

it seems the same people who think barkley was tough n a great defender r the same ones who like amare n the phoenix suns. could it be cause they both played in phoenix, emannaen. anyways, i wasnt just talkin bout barkley's defense. i was talkin about his mental attitude towards the game. barkely was aggressive but mentally weak. kind of like a bully on the playground who when it comes down to it, doesnt have any real balls. i'm not sayin he was a bad player by any means, but he could have been much better, especially towards the end of his career if he stayed focused n worked out in the offseason. he lost alot of his athletic ability. even jordan called barkley a lazy-ass. not in those words, but he always told barkley to work on his game more in the offseason. did u ever see barkely add to many moves to his repertoire aas the seasons progressed. yao will add more to his game every season cause hes got the mentality for it and wants to improve. thats not soft.

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting emannen:</div><div class="quote_post">Please give a simple one word answer to this question, there is no explanation needed. Is Yao Ming a ?soft? NBA player? Please keep in mind that "soft" players can still produce and be good-great NBA players. I am particularly interested in posters that are not Rockets fans. I'll begin............Yes he is soft</div>

Hm,You are one of Amare's fans.I'm from China.I love Yao.He's our hero. However, sometimes he's a LITTLE soft. There are many reasons.First Van Gundy always ask Yao to take charge for T-MAC,M.James or even Sura who as a PG always forget to pass the ball to a big guy whose FT% is 50+!Second Asian's strength and explosive effort is weaker than black,we shouldn't want an Asian to jump as high as Stoudemire. On the other hand,Juwan Howard played not well enough to give Yao a hand in defence.I believe in the season of 2005-2006,Yao will get 20/10 after Swift,a strong PF join in Rockets.
