Running off Trip's idea to stimulate some convo in the lounge, politics, is always a hotly debated subject. Are you a fan of George W. Bush? Do you agree with the War in Iraq? Are you a Republican or Democrat or Independent or in the middle?
well since this isn't a political board I'll just leave at this No I'm not a fan of George Bush No I don't agree with the war in Iraq...there are other areas that we should lay our interest in (particulary here in the U.S.) And I can honestly say that I'm not a R,D,or I........I don't agree with the R's way of keeping the rich rich and the poor poor, and I don't agree with some D's who believe in things such as abortion and other things........with that being said I still would rather have a D in office than R.....I'll just leave it at that.
I'm not a fan of Bush. The war in Iraq has still not been justified, but has just resulted in deaths of people from many countries. Should anyone agree with it? I'm a Liberal by Canadian standards, which is in the middle of the political spectrum. Would that be in between the Democrats and Republicans?
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"> Are you a fan of George W. Bush? Do you agree with the War in Iraq? We didn't achieve anything but elevated gas prices and a lot of dead soldiers. I'm not a democrat or republican since I don't exactly follow politics. But if I had to pick, I'd want a democrat in office rather than those darn republicans.
not a fan of george bush not happy with the war in iraq, cause im still paying freaking50 bucks to fill my tank im neither nor democrat or republican, i go for those whose ideals and morals i admire
May I add that Bush's and the Fed Govt.'s handling of the situation in New Orleans has been terrible.....this just goes to further prove that racism is alive and running well in America today.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting THE DREAM:</div><div class="quote_post">May I add that Bush's and the Fed Govt.'s handling of the situation in New Orleans has been terrible.....this just goes to further prove that racism is alive and running well in America today.</div> Racism? ******. I've got plenty of friends and family a few miles down from where I live in Mississippi who lost their homes and jobs from this... and guess what? They're white.
^Yeah, we have been doing a crappy job with Katrina. Nothing about racism, i dont know why people are concluding that. I am a republican. I support Bush. I support the war in Iraq.
^^^You must be white or extremely naive. Yes there are whites out there, but the majority of the people left behind are poor black folks that had no way of getting out.......People have been out there for days with no support from "our" president............it seems as if more attention has been put on the "looters" than the actual tragic situation that's happening.......you can live in your dream world if you want, but we live in a very racist country and Katrina has brought to the forefront what this country has been doing for years, if you haven't figured that out then maybe you need to put yourself into someone elses shoes.

I would highly suggest you learn about how your government operates before you make such a statement like that. First off the reason it has taken so long for New Orleans to get federal aid in the ways of troops is because the govenor of the state of Louisiana and the mayor of New Orleans are complete dumbasses. Under Federal law it is illegal for U.S. troops to occupy an American city. Only at the request of the govenor of a state, can the federal government sweep into action and bring in federal troops to help in the relief effort. The govenor of Mississippi and Alabama called for federal help immediately and immediately declared martial law. The govenor of Louisiana waited till recently to do that(hence the reason why the relief effort is just starting to pick up). You can thank the govenor of Louisiana for that. I think Bush's handling of the situation has been fine, its his new director of Homeland Security that is a complete idiot. In an unprecedented move, he declared a federal disaster emergency BEFORE Katrina hit. This means that FEMA could already start moving into the region before the storm hit and begin making disaster plans. You need to realize that New Orleans would have been in great shape had the leevies not broken. With 170+ mph winds though its sort of hard for them to stay intact. The geniusness of why to build a city/live in one 15 feet below see level on the Gulf Coast just became a reality to 1.3 million people. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">People have been out there for days with no support from "our" president............it seems as if more attention has been put on the "looters" than the actual tragic situation that's happening.</div> Welcome to America and the influence the media plays. The media is all about attention and the reason you are seeing all the looting rather than the rescues is because it makes for better TV. We live in a highly "negative" society here in the U.S. where we would rather watch people steal stuff then be rescued. It is sad but true... Just so you understand the good things that are happening, over 3000+ people have been saved by the Coast guard in the aftermath following Katrina and food and supplies are just starting to get into the region in full force. Over 30k+ people have been evacuated to Houston alone(where they have been treated like royalty getting food, water, shelter, medical care) I live in Houston and have seen this first hand. If you don't think that the whole country is doing everything in the best of their ability to help these people, come to Houston for a day. Thousands more have been evacuated to other parts of Louisiana, Tennessee, Alabama, etc. Also realize that over 80% of New Orleans is completely underwater making travel just a wee-bit hard. Since the roads can't be used, people are having to use boats and helicopters for rescue operations. Using trucks would be quicker however at the moment that is not a viable situation. How does "racism" play into this at all? This is the largest natural disaster in our nation's history and the people of the United States have responded in an extraordinary fashion. The reason you didn't see the results you wanted, quick enough is because it took the govenor of Louisiana way to freaking long to ask for federal aid. Instead of the mayor of New Orleans bitching about the situation, he should have asked for federal aid immediately following the situation. The reason the federal government can't immediately go into an American city with troops stems back to the civil war when Sherman marched federal troops into the South killing thousands apon thousands of people. It is only when the govenor of a state requests troops or the local government does that they can be sent in. Could have this situation been handled better? Absolutely. Should the mayor of New Orleans be re-elected? Hell-no. Should the govenor of Louisiana be re-elected? Hell-no. Is this a "racism" issue as to why it has taken so long to respond? Hell-no. It is the American spirit that is infact leading to one of the largest relief efforts ever organized in America.
Are you a fan of George W. Bush? I don't really know. Do you agree with the War in Iraq? Yes, somewhat. If there was MWOD then, it was the right action to take. Are you a Republican or Democrat or Independent or in the middle? Middle

Damn all this process BS....there are people dying out there everyday....those people in New Orleans are "Americans"....they are tax paying citizens who contribute to this country.....when 9/11 happened the Fed Govt. was all over everything, Bush or the White House didn't have to wait for a "call" from state officials to know that they needed help, it's common sense that they needed to get out there ...When the Tsunami (which happened in another damn country) happened, we didn't have to wait on a call..........when a tragedy of the kind that happens in N.O. is going on, "our" govt. on all levels should be involved, we shouldn't even need to make a "call" if anyone in Washington has half a brain......and I'm glad you brought up the point about the leevies....state officials had been warning "our" national government about those leevies for years now, so it shouldn't come as a big shock that they didn't hold up...I saw the sec. of homeland security on "Meet The Press" this morning and he knew all about the leevie system, so my question is why wasn't anything done????........and I'm not pointing all fingers at Bush, because our homeland security and FEMA have done a poor job also, but as "our" President that bigot deserves some of the blame......he's supposed to be "our" leader so how come he hasn't been leading......instead of being on vacation and playing a banjo before the storm hit, we should've had vehicles, planes, trains, etc. helping people get out of N.O. that couldn't get out.....Instead of having orders to shoot "looters", we should have more attention put on on saving people. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Just so you understand the good things that are happening, over 3000+ people have been saved by the Coast guard in the aftermath following Katrina and food and supplies are just starting to get into the region in full force. How come news crews have been able to get in ratherly easily????.....If news vans and helicopters can get in, why can't our Federal Govt.????......and yes people have been in shelters down here, but royalty????......you call sleeping in cots or seats everynight wondering where your family members are at royalty?????....get real man. This American "spirit" that you talk about only refers to some.....America is still racist and has been since it's existence.....instead of worrying about other countries we need to fix our own first, because it damn sure isn't perfect.
I think there should be policies set in place, which must be followed. I'm not sure why the governor of NO didn't ask for federal help immediately, but something which bothers me is the lack of attention to the levies. It's been reported, engineers knew all along the levees could not support a major storm. They just now repaired a 700 foot crack in the levee to prevent any more water from flooding in. I think it's sad semantics interferred with thousands of people dying and not getting aid. It's not a valid excuse, and someone should have advised the governor on the steps to take. When you are in a crisis you aren't always thinking straight. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">instead of worrying about other countries we need to fix our own first, because it damn sure isn't perfect</div> I've felt this way for a longtime as well. The infrastructure of the country, especially in major cities cannot handle the growth any longer. I live in California, and there's constant traffic on the freeways. I can only imagine the chaos that would ensue if there was a natural disaster. People wouldn't be able to evacuate from a situation. America seems to be more reactive than proactive in their efforts lately. It's very discouraging.

Why not model Louisiana the same way? Their system works and they've had to deal with far worse. Another example of not being prepared.
^^LOL, yeah I saw that the other day. The media acts like black people are the only people who have ever looted. I wouldn't even call what most of the people out there are doing looting, they're just trying to survive.
It is looting, but I think there's a major difference between trying to get some food, clothes, or medical supplies versus trying to grab a new TV or VCR. Of course someone could argue they simply cannot live without TV.

Well my thing is, all the t.v.'s,dvd player, etc. that some people are taking are going to the dump anyways...so in all honesty who cares if they're taking them......but it's funny how the media doesn't focus on none of the good things that the people in N.O. are doing....they hardly ever show the men going from house to house saving people, it's always constant footage of "lawlessness" and "looters".
The Governor wrote a requeston on August, 28th, 2005 for Federal Assistance. http://www.gov.state.la.us/Disaster%20Relief%20Request.pdf
