Two Warriors' Trade Exceptions Expire Tuesday 23rd of August, 2005 The Warriors have two trade exceptions that expire tonight that they can use to make a move. The club is currently about $4.8 million under the luxury tax threshold, so they could add some salary without being subject to the dollar for dollar tax. In addition to the two expiring Trade Exceptions, the Warriors also currently hold another large Trade Exception from last year's Cliff Robinson trade, their full $1.67M Bi-annual Exception, and are only one of 4 teams to still hold their entire $5M Mid-Level Exception. http://warriors.realgm.com/ This passed very quietly. I guess the Warriors are gonna stand pat going in to the season.
Nice find Montay, this means the Knicks-Cavs-Warriors trade scenario is out the door. Sounds like the Warriors will stand pat for now. I think they will keep the MLE open, so they can take advantage of the 'Gilbert Arenas' rule, and not risk losing Monta Ellis.
Thanks Montay. Shape, I'm not sure that's the reason they'd skip out on the MLE. Plainly, I don't think the W's need anyone for starters. Second reason is maybe Mullin does have reservations to do something with both Dunleavy and Pietrus that he'll need as much salary room as possible next season. He'd be a fool to commit too early to one guy and lose out some promising talent off the bench like Zarko or Pietrus. I think Mullin could have given away Pietrus in that Bdiddy trade, but he chose not too (and I'm sure Allan Bristow was asking about him).

So it shouldn't factor in to Mullin's plan to save cap space by not using it. However, by not using it now Mullin can use it next year on a player in case the Warriors do go over the cap space. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">So it is not true that being under the cap necessarily means a team has room to sign free agents. For example, assume the cap is $42.5 million, and a team has $36 million committed to salaries. They also have a mid-level exception for $4.5 million and a traded player exception for $5 million. Even though their salaries put them $6.5 million under the cap, their exceptions are added to their salaries, putting them at $45.5 million, or $3 million over the cap. So they actually have no cap room to sign free agents, and must instead use an exception. </div> Source: Larry Coon

That's one of those convoluted rules, but it really only applies to teams below the salary cap. The MLE, if you are under the cap, acts like a qualifying offer (a place holder against your cap) in that it counts against the cap even though you may not actually add a contract. You MAY be able to renounce it, but don't quote me on that. I think a team is allowed the MLE each year, whether they use it or not. The other, smaller exception, cannot be used in successive years...or some sh*t like that.
fan, I posted the new CBA resources in the Warriors Lounge, so if anyone's hardcore enough to actually study it... I actually have the link to the NBA players association. http://www.nbpa.org/
thanks, i'll pass. i only get interested in that stuff if it affects the Ws. last year, when it looked like they might have lots of cap space, there was a post that they actually would have very little because of qualifying offers to Jrich and Murpy, plus the MLE (of course, they extended both, ending any chance of being under the cap). but i'll file that away as a reference for 2009-10, when, potentially, we will have some cap space again.
