Yao Ming Agrees to Sign a 5 Year Extension It was reported on the News tonight. Not alot of details about the contract yet but Im sure we will here more tomorrow. And once again it was Fox26 Sports Marc Berman who broke the news 1st!
Wow, 5 years.. I sure hope he at least got a maximum-type contract.. He might not deserve it now, but come on.. it's Yao + 1 billion chinese market!
Wow! That's awesome! Yao for 5 more years! I don't have to worry about the Lakers trying to make a run at him now lol!
Woohooo! The Rockets have accomplished everything they set out to do this offseason, and then some by bringing in Anderson. Signing Yao to an extension is a must, and now the rumors of him going to Golden State or LA should be dead. To say the truth, I'm a bit disappointed he didn't get signed to a six-year contract.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting dakeem1:</div><div class="quote_post">are 6-year contracts allowed under the new CBA?</div> The team is allowed to re-sign its' player to a 6 years contract, but in Yao's case, he still has one year remaining in his rookie's contract. Therefore, he can only extend 5 years with the Rockets and plus the remaining 1 year in his previous contract, it will come to a total of 6 years under contract with the Rockets. <div class="quote_poster">Quoting SupraJames:</div><div class="quote_post">Wow, 5 years.. So, plus his salary of last Rookie's year with the Rockets, the total amount for 6 years will roughly be $80M. <font color="DarkRed">Welcome to the Forum! I am happy we extended his contract. Especially because he is easily marketable. Just wish we could have room for Yao, TMac, and like 7 good role players. I am not sure if we will have room for them now that we maxed Yao's contract. Does anyone else have an idea on this?
Let's be frank here. With the contracts of Yao, McGrady, Swift and Howard, we'd never be under the salary cap enough to acquire any big name free agent. The only way to do that would be through trade or the MLE, which is nowhere near a maximum. However, being over the salary cap doesn't mean that we will have to pay the luxury tax. It's entirely possible that with the expiring of Wesley, Norris, Baker and Ward's contracts, we'll be under the luxury threshold.
Like Trip said, finally the Yao to LAL or GSW can die. The Rockets had a great off-season and extending Yao was their best move yet. Now there won't be any tension during the rest of the season and no drama circulating whether Yao would re-sign or explore his options.

Great news. With this, we solidify our core, and like Shape said, dispells all Yao to Golden State or Los Angeles rumors. If Yao continues to develop at the rate that he has these past two years, the contract will definitely be worth it. The sky's the limit for him, I mean he still has at least five good years ahead of him, which is exactly how long we signed him for. Dawson is the man.
Good job by the rockets to keep Yao around for the long run,Yao will develop to be a great player and he and T Mac are goin to take the rockets to new heights(dont 4get swift).
He'll be like the Dream. With the Rockets almost his whole career. Till then, Yao Ming..Yao Ming aming aming..Yao Ming..Yao Ming.
