BEIJING, Aug. 26 (Xinhuanet) -- Chinese center Yao Ming will miss the 10th Chinese National Games for his commitment to the Houston Rockets in the 2005-06 preseason games.

"I don't think I can play in the National Games. My contract (with the Rockets) doesn't allow me though I really want to play (in the Games)," Yao said on Friday.

According to a sports official from Shanghai, Yao's native city, the Shanghai basketball team and Shanghai Sports Bureau had contacted the Rockets recently on the release of Yao for the Games representing the Shanghai team.

Li Qiuping, head coach of Shanghai Sharks, travelled to Houston last week after a workout camp of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) league in Ohio to discuss the issue, but he failed to keep Yao until the Games, which is to set off on October 12 in Jiangsu Province.

The Rockets want Yao to come back to the United States after the Asian Basketball Championships, which is slated from August 8-16 in Qatar, to join the team competing in the preseason games.

Reports said the Rockets need Yao to help newcomers, power forward Stromile Swift and point guard Derek Anderson, whom they added to the squad during the summer, to get acquainted with the team as soon as possible.

Yao has to play for the Chinese national team in the world championships, Asian Championships and the Olympic Games, but is not asked to play in the National Games, according to his contract wth the Chinese Basketball Association.

The Rockets will kick off their preseason games against the Philladelphia 76ers on October 11.

OK now. Let's see Yao get some rest. Get in that gym, and work on his game. Maybe a little soul food wouldn't hurt. lol

Awesome news. However I really hope this doesn't agitate the Chinese gov't and make them anal about future players wanting to play in the NBA.

That's what I fear for. The Chinese govt in future negotiations with the NBA will definitely push for the National Team to be placed over professional games, which will definitely suck.

I don't really mind it either ways. In both cases, Yao will still play basketball in October, so the idea of more rest might not materialize. Facing NBA opponents will definitely be more challenging than the likes of Iran and Malaysia though.

This is great for both Yao and the Rockets....

Yao will get his rest and he can also improve on the stuff he isn't so great at....

Also the new players on the team can assimilate easier into the new season by playing with Yao and getting acquainted with the Rocket's style of play...

Yao will fly to houston soon as the tournament ends

This or that? NBA preseason or 10th National Games? Which one Yao will pick? Rockets helped Yao to do the selection and he will definitely appear on the court of NBA Preseason an officially rejection of the request from a Shanghai negotiation squad sent privately to Houston last Sunday in hopes that Rockets would allow Yao to participate in the 10th National Sports Meeting to help Shanghai get a championship.

Yao is regarded crucially indispensable to Shanghai Team, Rockets and China?s National Team. Having succeeded in purchasing Swift and Anderson, Rockets have narrowed down the target to ranking top 4 in the west conference and at least second round in off-season. It?s proved that China?s National Team is doubtlessly mediocre without Yao?s help. And Shanghai Basketball Team are willing to take in Yao to maintain a contender of the gold medal in 10th National Games, while needless to say how much he means to Shanghai?s dream. As a matter of fact, the requests representative squad from Shanghai including Li Yaomin, the former vice manager of Eastern Basketball Club (Shanghai) came up with were rejected by Alexander with a firm NO, and it practically sentenced the elimination of Shanghai from being the gold medal contender. The last time Yao had played for Shanghai was on the night of Apr 4th 2002, and Shanghai won the championship of Series A 33 years after they did last time.

It makes perfect sense that Rockets refuse to let Yao linger too much in China. As stated in the contract Yao signed with Rockets, he must play for China?s National Team only in intercontinental or upper classic tournaments, while bearing zero responsibility to play for his former club or native city; and there?re schedule overlaps between the 10th National Games and Rockets? preseason, while Rockets are eager to have Yao back soon as possible to adjust to his new signed teammates: he?s the core of the tactics. Plus, in case that Yao get injured, Rockets have bought him a huge insurance, which only covers the games of NBA Rockets and China?s National Team. Even though Shanghai has posed the willingness to buy Yao an extra insurance if he?s allowed to stay for no more than two weeks time, this is way too much sacrifice and risk that Rockets cannot take.

Yao definitely will fly back to Houston soon as the Asian Tournament is over.

    Welcome to JBB!

You're absolutely right in saying that no one pays attention to the Chinese National Games. Having Yao play for Shanghai is stretching it. Yao owes nothing to Shanghai and it's absurd to actually plead him to play for his birthcity when Yao has nothing to gain.

Just welcoming new members. This thread has gotten way off-topic though, so let's stay away from the Chinese for now...[IMG]
