<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">A Detroit Pistons fan who threw a coin at the Philadelphia 76ers ' Allen Iverson, hitting him in the back of the head, received a five-day jail sentence and a lengthy list of other punishments Thursday.

Dennis W. Pauley, 31, of Taylor, was arrested immediately after the April 26 incident, which occurred late in the Pistons' 99-84 victory in Game 2 of the first round of the NBA playoffs. He pleaded guilty in June to a misdemeanor charge of throwing an object onto a playing surface.

Besides jail, Oakland County District Judge Julie Nicholson sentenced Pauley to two years of probation and ordered him not to drink alcohol during that time. She also fined him $200, ordered that he serve 10 weekends of supervised community service, required that he enroll in Alcoholics Anonymous and outpatient substance abuse treatment, and ordered him to undergo drug and alcohol testing while on probation.

Nicholson told Pauley that he faced 60 days in jail for each violation of the terms of his probation.</div>

He deserved jail time for this. He could have seriously hurt one of the players while throwing a coin. He got what he deserved.

Call me crazy (and that's fine if you do), but for all the bullcrap that athletes do and get away with, this is small potatoes. Just Iverson himself, who beat his wife (girlfriend?) and chased her out of the house with a gun, and never got so much as a bad rap for it. I agree with the idea that he should seek some counseling for his alcohol abuse, and personally I think that the Pistons shouldn't be serving alcohol in their arena anymore, but jail time is too much. Athletes mouth off the fans (not that they don't in return, about 700 fold), antagonize them, sometimes get into altercations with them, constantly abuse drugs and alcohol, perjure themselves (lie under oath, for those not in the legal field), are regularly in traffic incidents, and not to mention commit violent crimes and get paid millions of dollars to do so, all of these legal transgressions to no avail. A fan throwing a coin a should be the least of the legal system's worries as to what goes on in a professional sports arena. And fan behavior should be the least of the legal system's worries in regards to what goes on in professional sports. But, as usual, he with the most money wins, and clearly it wasn't this poor, pathetic drunk.

Finally, some punishment for the guy that chucked the coin. To me, this shows just how slow the legal system here is. That was months and months ago, jeez. But I gotta agree with CK on this one, what he did was wrong and things like that shouldn't go unpunished.

It's a bit off-topic, but what happened to that beer chucker in Detroit last year? Did he pay a fine or did he actually get a settlement from Artest? The way that the system is screwed is that if you provoke someone and get beat up for it, you can get a lump sum of cash, especially from those like Iverson and Artest with loads to spend.

It's good that he is getting punished for what he did. Now fans will think twice before they do something like that. Im hoping their what be anymore incidents like this anymore.

Ya I think he got what he deserved. Fans these days are to insane in the arenas, those people should be jailed and hopefully that makes other crazy fans think twice before doing something stupid.

That is a completely situation and that was only an acquisition. You don't know what went down the night that happened how many times do young black African Americans get falsely accused of a crime, especially athletes in general. It seems as if people just listen to what they read and see rather than actually evidence that supported whether or not the acquisitions were true or not. For the record he never chased his wife out of the house with a gun, he went looking for his wife because they got in an argument, I saw that on the Stephen A. Smith, and I think AI is man enough not to lie in front of millions of people on TV.

Hey man, I hear you, how many times do young black men in this country get the short end of the long arm of the law? Who could count them, nevertheless, there are certainly more instances of what I'm talking about than just that one circumstance. There have been plenty of times, even in the past year, where we've seen professional athletes skate on charges that should've been pursued further. But never mind all that, this guy got what he got, and there's no changing that. I'm just saying we should observe these situations with an objective eye, and remember that athletes aren't gods, they should get what they deserve too.

I`m glad justice was made for this guy. Never should you tamper with players at any kind of sport during a game.

He did the crime he got punished. Maybe next time he won't be such an idiot. Athletes need to have some protection, after all, it is them you are there to see.

This Detroit fan was just being an ass. I'd rather see him charged cash rather than only getting 5 days.

To the fan who threw the coin-

While serving your 5 day sentence, make sure you don't drop that bar of soap! [IMG]

well. that man got what he deserves. like C.K. said, he could have seriously hurt someone with the coin. how would he like it if someone threw a coin at him when he was minding his own bussiness and doing his job? i hope he learns his lesson.

Who would be stupid enough to chuck something at the players on the court? Amazing how dumb people are these days...

I think this is a good sentance, as even if your view is that hed didn't deserve jail time, this will act as a warning to others who might think of commiting such a deed, hopefully putting idiots like this off doing such things.

I honestly feel this whole thing was blown out of proportion. What harm can a coin do hit a guy in the head or face and hurt for a little while? I don?t think this guy should get jail time. People who are convicted of aggressive assault get probation most of the time when sentence is passed. So throwing a coin should not be a jail offense. That is like saying you will go to jail for two weeks because you littered. I would think a 500 dollar fine or something to that extent would have been more than fair especially when AI himself forgave the fan for his action.

Well..if you say that they should be fined as much, if not more for doing so (and don't get me wrong, I don't think anyone should do it), then you also have to consider giving them slack on some of the things that they can't get away with, that another might normaly. I could be wrong...
