<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The Rockets' offseason stockpile of free-agent talent shiftd to the frontcourt Thursday when they signed another player, Lonny Baxter, they have targeted for months. The Rockets had hoped to sign Baxter since his star turn with their 5-0 summer-league team in Minneapolis. Baxter, going from consistently effective to occasionally dominant, averaged 21 points and 6.2 rebounds, moving the Rockets to pursue the 6-8 forward. Though Baxter, who finished last season playing in Greece, was not nearly as coveted an acquisition as Stromile Swift or Derek Anderson, he had been very much a part of the Rockets' offseason plans since early July. "He played very well for us this summer," Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson said after signing Baxter to a one-year guaranteed contract. "I think he was as attracted to us as we were to him. He felt this was the right place for him. "We like his energy, size and I think he'll be a very good defender under Jeff (Van Gundy) and the coaching staff. He can be effective in the paint and he proved on the summer team that he is a much better shooter than people thought he was. We feel fortunate to have him signed."</div> Source
like this acquistion for 2 reasons 1)gives us depth 2)gaurantees another offseason move b/c we have to many on roster which will either be a waiving of a player that doesnt get much minutes or a 2 for 1 trade which will send an expiring contract and a player we dont give minutes for
very nice move on our part...baxter adds youth and more frontcourt depth, which is always a good thing ...hopefully he sticks around long-term and learns from veterans such as Yao, Howard and Mutombo...
