I was wondering if signing Gary Payton would make anyone besides me angry. I have been slowly losing respect for Payton since his signing with the Lakers. He tried to ride Shaq and Kobe to a ring and failed. If he signs with us he will be trying to ride Shaq and Wade to a championship. Besides the fact of him possibly being in a Heat jersey angering me, he is injury prone and isn?t the same Payton as before. I don?t know if he is just bad at threes but last year for the Celtics he didn't look like caliber three point shooter the Heat need, because along with playing with Shaq comes a lot of open threes and we need a player that is going to consistently knock them down. Your Thoughts?
I don't think we should sign him. He is basically a distraction at this point in his career and hasn't been very productive in the last few seasons. If we do sign him, Payton better get his act together. On the Lakers, he was upset with the amount of shots he got and wanted a bigger role in the offense. Now that he is older, he needs to realize he isn't the superstar he once was. He is now a role player who is jumping from team to team in search of a championship. If he comes to Miami, he will have to come off the bench behind Jason Williams and he will have to accept this new role or things could get ugly.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Heat4Life:</div><div class="quote_post">We need a backup PG that can lock down players and Gary fits the bill. Wouldn't anger me at all.</div> Unfortunately Gary can't "lock down" anyone anymore. He can't keep up with the younger players. I think the Heat need a pg that can shoot 3's like damon, hopefully they can find one. Or else lets hope jwill and toine can hit open 3's consistently.

If he can't play some defense in about 3 5-minute spurts then he shouldn't be playing. And if you think the 3s are gonna make a difference then look up how well Damon Jones, Eddie Jones, or Rasual Butler shot 3s in the ECF.
i think gary would be a good addition to the Heat he is good vetran who can post up good numbers as for chemistry: he cant ruin it with shaq around
Gary Payton may not hit the three all that capably anymore, but believe me, any contender would be lucky to have him. No one wants a ring more than this man, and he proved it playing for LA. He did the stuff he needed to do when he was told to, and last year here in Boston, he played like a heady veteran with nothing to prove to anyone, which says to me that he learned his lesson about the championship, and simple wants to play to win, like he always has. I respect him for his fire, wholeheartedly respect his abilities, and think that like any true competitor, he wants that ring that just caps his career. Karl Malone dropped out of the running as a result of his lack of desire towards the game, not a championship, and GP hasn't done the same, I can't say enough about his character. He isn't the cancer everyone thinks he is, he was a boyscout in Boston, and he just wants his family and contract respected, I see no problem with that.
To be honest I would rather go for Jay Williams over Gary. But still if we were to sign GP I would certainly not be angry. Yes he has a big mouth and that might cause problems but Shaq put out on the paper he wont let nothing like that happen. And although effects of old age might come, we all know GP still has those good post up moves, also he is a vet. The reason why I would go for Jay Williams is because he really impressed me his first year, plus hes young and wants to prove he still has it in him. You got to respect the guy, after a deadly motorcycle accident instead of giving up he began to train and had that goal to come back and play.
Gary Payton is arrogant, and is 1/4 of the player he once was. He can barely play defense against SGs, and PGs just fly by him. His presence on the court creates a huge hole on defense. He also is a bad 3-pt shooter, which is what Miami needs in their pg. GP wants to play for a contender, but Miami and Phoenix obviously wanted Eddie House more than GP, because they both gave him offers before Payton. Payton could also be disturbing in the locker room, because of his big mouth. He would probably complain, because of lack of minutes behind J Will. I think Miami is better off getting Jay Williams or trading for a back-up pg.
I too think Miami would be better off signing Jay Williams...however, if they did sign Payton, it wouldnt necessarily anger me...he'd fit in a whole lot better in miami than he did in LA...but he wont be the reason why and if the Heat win the championship...
if Miami gets GP then they might as well kiss any chemistry they hoped to have good bye. I mean seriously...you already have the selfish Antoine Walker on the team, Jason Williams is kind of a hassle as well but his sick passing numbers make up for it. And then u have shaq complaining about everything as usual....u add GP to the mix and that would be the most high strung locker room ever
Who is any Laker fan to talk about chemistry when their favorite player is Kobe Bryant? For those who don't know, Kobe Bryant is the same guy who dismantled one of the best teams of the decade. He forced Jerry Buss' hand in trading Shaq and firing Phil Jackson. He's the same guy that has his teammates calling him the GM. Yeah, I love how Kobe Bryant and Laker fans are so concerned over our chemistry. They're so concerned that they forgot to look at their own team and players.
