I don't think the Rockets can offer him a contract though. Do you think Jay would ask for much?

Is there anyway at all we can sign him? I dont think we have any money left at all...in fact I think that the money we did have left we gave to Baxter...
I think you can always sign players to the minimum. Actually, w had already used up both our MLE and LLE before we signed Baxter, so his signing was already for the minimum. I don't think it'll hurt if we do sign Williams to a contract, but if he does sign with us, he won't play much because Sura and James will definitely be ahead of him in the rotation. I think he would prefer to sign with a team weak at PG and without much playoff hopes, like the Raptors or Bucks, so that he could come back at his own pace without much pressure. It would be nice to have the 1-2 duo in Yao and Williams though. Both were consensus top 3 picks in the 2002 draft.
Anyways, I have some feedback from his tryout, tho not much... Williams is at about 80% overall and Luther Head made him look plain silly when they played and worked out against each other... not much info, but take it for what it is...
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Houston:</div><div class="quote_post">Anyways, I have some feedback from his tryout, tho not much... Illinois head coach, always said Head was the most talented out of the trio of Deron Williams and Dee Brown. I don't think Jay Williams would make the team, and the Houston roster is already 16 players deep.
No way I see Jay Will with the Rockets. I really hope to see L. Head get an oppurtunity to get comfortable in the offense. With so much talent I would hate to see him wasted on the bench because he cant run the offense. TMac, Swft, James, DA, Head. We got quick and athletic fast.
Don't like it...........Getting Jay Will is a obvious slap in a face to Head. If we get rid of our glut a PG, then I would like to see Payton on the team. I don't know why he wouldn't be an option. He basically said that he wants to play for Houston. If we got GP, I would imagine that either Sura or James is gone. I like Sura, but James might be the odd man out.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting TmacGarnett:</div><div class="quote_post">jay will will come if rockets pull 2 for 1 trade am i right or wrong? (assuming he does come)</div> Who in the world would you want to trade for him from our team in a two for one deal?
The Rockets have invited J-Will for a second workout. I cant imagine why after Head abused him in the first tryout. If anything, that should tell the Rockets to give Head whatever mninutes they might've imagined giving Williams...
Second tryout? Why are we so interested? With Sura, James, Head, Norris, and Ward all on the roster, we shouldn't be wanting a point guard that much. If Head, who won't even play much this season, abused Williams, why would we really need him?
OUr backcourt is already full, seems real stupid to bring him in. Not only that, we already have two gaurd prospects, one of them with us, so how would this do us any good. It would be king of cool though, him and yao, top picks from the 2002 draft.
We have after training camp to trim the roster to 15, so I think Dawson's plan is to let Ward/Norris/Baker try and prove their worth to the team in training camp, and waive the one who seemed the least likely to contribute. I think it's entirely possible that we have around 18 players on the roster going into training camp, the newly signed players all with non-guaranteed contracts who can be waived anytime.
You can't judge a good player from 1 training session and compare him to the likes of sura(old knees), james(not a traditional pg role player), MOOCHIE???, WARD(Injuries+old=done), Luther=2nd round rookie. You gotta see his past, he had pretty good stats, and you can't erase his instincts and i'm sure after his long rehab he's recovered. I also have to add that even though he did probably lose his speed, you still can't deny that he's an established nba pg who has good basketball IQ. Example: Francis has hops and speed and street smarts but obviously lacks p.g basketball IQ; i'm sure most rockets fans agree with me on this. If we add him for cheap(which is good because he wouldn't have been this cheap ever if he didnt get injured), He's gna be attracted if we show our interests in him since he knows we're gna be a great team. James is good but he's not a starting pg and if we don't find any p.g i'm sure TMAC will take the role of pg midseason when sura's hurtin and james is shooting (instead of passign) all day.
The Raptors offered him around $850K non-guaranteed to play for them next season. I'm not sure what the Rockets have left to spend, but they'll have to pay him at least that much. drm2dnk what made Jay Williams a good player was his speed and explosiveness. If he's lost his main asset on the court there's really no reason to consider him. He also doesn't have a high basketball IQ like you claim. He lost a lot of games in crunch time when he played at Duke and average close to 4 turnovers a game in college. Also it was Mike Dunleavy Jr. iniating the offense, not Jay Will. With the Bulls he only had a 2 to 1 AST/TO ratio, which is below average for a starting PG in the NBA. Let's also consider Jay Williams plays well for the Rockets and gets a chance to play a lot of minutes because Sura and James get injured. If Jay Williams shows some flashes of his rookie season then the Rockets probably won't be able to afford him and give him the minutes he wants.
Shape, Williams has made it clear that its not about the money with him...its about the situation, so I dont think the Rockets would have to offer a certain amount just for him to consider playing here...however, he has to realize that he wont see significant minutes with us...we have sura and james who will definitely see time, and then we have Head as our long-term solution to the position...so why would Williams consider Houston? Unless possibly Rockets management see Head as more of a 2-guard than a point guard, which then would make some sense out of their interest in Williams...
