NBA.com had a poll which askes who has the best chance to surpass Kareem's record. Lebron was leading the polls and following in order were Kobe, T-Mac, Shaq, and other. What do you think? You think Lebron is really going to surpass 38, 387 pts? That means Lebron would have to average at least 24 pts a game for 20 years playing a full 82 game season.

Jabbar was a Laker and Kobe, another poll candidate, is a Laker too.

Out of the current players in the league I think three have a legit shot at breaking Kareem's scoring record.

    1. Shaq O'Neal (23,583) needs to score 14,804 more points. It's going to be hard for Shaq to catch Jabar, but if Shaq can play 7 or 8 more seasons, it's feasible. The key for him will be his health and desire to continue playing basketball as he approaches 40.

    2. Kobe Bryant (14034) needs to score 24,353 more points. Kobe was the youngest to reach the 14,000 point mark in the history of the NBA. He will need to have some 30+ PPG seasons to have a legit chance. It's harder for guards to play in the league in the twilight of their careers than it is for big men.

    3. Amare Stoudemire (4319) needs 34,068 more points. He's my darkhorse pick to break the record. Amare is still very young, and plays in a point friendly offense. He jumped from 20.6PPG in the 2003-04 season to 26PPG last year. He also shot a ridiculous 56% from the field.

I never though about Amare. I serioulsy doubt Shaq will get it let alone attempt to get it. Miami was stupid for giving him 100m for 5 years, but that's a different story. Shaq has at least 2 decent years left in him. When I say decent around 20ppg and 8-10 rbds at best. Following right behind age, has got to be some arthiritc pain. Shaq is heavy, always been heavy, and will always be heavy. For him to have been jumping around all those years had to do some serious damage on the leg area, especially the knees, and the hip. So in about his 3rd year into his new contract, shaq will be dead weight for the heat.

Kobe has a pretty good chance if he works hard enough at it. I think he is going to be an effective player until he retires. He keeps himself in great physical shape, that's almost all you hear about him in the post season, and he pushes himself to improve. But, to Kobe's and Shaq's disadvantage is the 1998-99 season where they played 50 games only. That's going to be an advantage for Lebron and others who joined the NBA after that, unless the NBA has another lockout soon which I don't see happening any time soon.

I voted for LeBron. I think the poll was "who has a chanse to surpass Kareems CSR", and I would say that LeBron has a small chanse, because he is still young, and does have some scoring talent. Kobe for example, is older, which gives him less time to score the points he needs. I would say that Shaq has no chanse, because he wont last that long. Amare could also have a shot at it.

Its too far away to say anything. Jordan didnt do it even with his scoring average. Guess time will tell.

Jordan probably would of done it if he didn't take all that time off for baseball.

I think LeBron has the best chance at it. He had a 1-2 year head start because of how good he was already out of high school.

We will have a better idea of how LeBron James is going to turnout after this season. The Cavs surrounded him with players who can score consistently, but will also take away shots from LeBron. Last year LeBron attempted 21 shots a game and averaged 27PPG. I think his attempts are going to drop to 16 or 17 a game and his scoring will be around 22 or 24 PPG this season. Larry Hughes, Damon Jones, Donyell Marshall, and Zydrunas Ilgauskas are all going to get their fair share of touches.

Exactly. As long as Cavs have this scoring bunch, Lebron's ppg will go down at least 3 or 4.

I dunno...they have a new system coming in..new coach new players. You wouldnt of thought Amare would of put up that many points while sharing the ball with Marion, Richardson, Johnson, Jackson, Nash and that crew of people, but he did. Its possible.

I would say that Lebron has the best chance, followed by Amare and then Bosh. i dont think Kobe can make it and i'm sure Shaq's not going to be able to keep up 20 points a game for 8 more years.

No one has said Bosh so i'll pick him. He's only a year older than Lebron and since he's a big man he'll probably be effective for longer.

I see either LeBron or Kobe passing it. Both have many years left in the NBA and Kobe with his workout routine, staying in top shapte etc... I think he'll still be playing in the NBA at 40.

what are you people syaing no one will break this record in the forseable future. the closest at it was karl malon and even he had to play into his early forties. any one who breakes the record would have to play for at least twenty seasons. kareem himself said no present players would do that, because they make so much money they would feel no need. It could only be a center who could possibly beat this record. kobe and lebron will not play at 40 nor could they.

I think Kareem's record is pretty untouchable, at least for a long time. LeBron may score a lot every year, but as he gets older, he will not be able to do as much as he can right now. LeBron is intelligent though, but Kareem had it real easy with his sky hooks and yoga. Kareem says it was because of yoga that he was able to play 20 years. To this day I still cannot understand why more players, espeically centers don't emphasize the use of the sky hook. It is unblockable if done properly. Amare Stoudemire is a feasible choice, espeically playing at PF or Center.

Bosh is not a volume scorer, if you look at big men, for them to be huge scorers, they have to either be very explosive, or have a dominant post game, Bosh has neither of those. He will be in the 20-22 PPG for most of his prime IMO, maybe get to 24 PPG or so at some point if the personell around him is weak, but he's not going to be scoring 27 PPG or anything like that.

Heh, I'm a Bosh fan, but I think its quite unlikely he has a chance to have the most points ever!

I think Kobe probably has the best chance at it. He takes a lot of shots, he has excellent conditioning(which will further his career), and he has a lot of determination.

I don't see the same determination in Lebron that Kobe has.
