Some will shudder at the notion, but it may not be all that far-fetched.

With captain Paul Pierce's image still suffering from his Game 6 playoff meltdown in Indiana, and persistent -- though repeatedly denied -- trade rumors, Antoine Walker traded (again), future Hall of Famer Gary Payton looking for work elsewhere and the recent draft choices still unrecognizable by the masses, Davis is quickly becoming the franchise's most visible player.

The one those with passing NBA interest still know only as a guy who once intentionally missed a shot to complete a triple-double, and the one whose arrival some considered the last straw for former coach Jim O'Brien, may now be emerging as the team's unlikely poster child.

"The fans who come to the games know," said Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck. "When Ricky comes in, he gets the biggest reception. And it's not just the dunks. It's because of seeing how Ricky goes up and down (the court). People are starting to catch on that Ricky is a solid, fundamental basketball player and a team basketball player."

His was often the name Grousbeck brought up first when listing positives during a recent media tour and the 25-year-old swingman seems ready to settle in as a veteran presence on an extremely young squad. He has been in Waltham throughout the summer working out with the younger players and yesterday held his own version of "American Idol" at HealthPoint, giving away season tickets he purchased to more than a dozen fans willing to display their passion for the team.

"There was a group of (fans) in Cleveland I had and wanted to bring it to Boston," Davis said. "I would have brought it in last year, but I didn't know how long I was going to be here with the Celtics and how it was all going to turn out. I like the Celtics now and feel like this is my home." </div>

Paul Pierce is the face of the Celtics but with all the hatred people have for him, you gotta bring this guy into the picture. He gets the love from Celtic fans because the way he plays: Ricky Davis can come off the bench and bring energy, shoot, and play defense, most NBA fans appreciate that. Im glag he feels happy in Boston hopefully he continues playing well for the Celtics.

its nice to see how Ricky has matured and developed into a veteran presence...I still feel that Pierce will be the face of the franchise until he leaves...I dont think you can judge his career and influence as a Celtic on one bad playoff performance...but Ricky D has become a leader and its shown in all facets of his game...

I think thats a little far fetched, I dont think fans have a HATRED for Pierce, I mean, he has been pretty much carrying us for a couple of seasons now, I think Paul Pierce is still the face of the organisation, but Ricky is catching up quickly, maybe they'll be just as popular as each other, like the Pierce/Walker combo?
