<div class="quote_poster">Quoting TmacGarnett:</div><div class="quote_post">mike bibby is a way better player and has a bigger impact than pau gasol. How is gasol on the top of this list.</div>

I knew this would come up, and the answer is that it's really hard to compare Power Forwards and Point Guards. However, you have to be impressed with what Pau Gasol has done in Memphis. Averaging about 18 ppg and 7 rpg on 51% FG shooting in only a little more than 30 mpg, he led them to the playoffs for the second straight season this year, and he deserves a lot of credit for that; you also have to notice that Mike Bibby couldn't do it when he was with the Grizzlies. If it weren't for the ten man rotation that the Grizzlies ran, Gasol's numbers would also be a lot better; probably around 24-28 ppg and 9-11 rpg, but there's only so much he can do when he plays on a team that limits his minutes and his touches so dramatically. People often make the mistake of assuming that Gasol has not improved since his Rookie of the Year season in '02, but just about anyone would struggle to improve their numbers if their minutes and touches didn't go up. Don't be fooled; Gasol is one of the best Power Forwards in the NBA and is on the verge of an eye-opening breakout year if the Grizzlies stick to their word and turn away from the ten man rotation this season.

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Run BJM:</div><div class="quote_post">While I think he has never been and will never be a top guard, Biby is the #1 in my book. In the past he has deserved to go but its probably too late now with Baron Davis arriving in the west. Also Jason Richardson and Elton Brand (unless you count when he was a reserve).</div>

I did not say Bibby is THE best point guard, I just mean the is one of the best, not flashiest , point guards there is today and I think he deserves to be an all star as much as anyone, because while all other great players have an all-star, he doesn't. And, for a veteran, he has shown great improvement. Lets hope he gets it [IMG] . But what do u mean Bibby will never be a top point guard but he is no.1 in your book? Not arguing, just asking [IMG]

MIke Bibby- is the most obvious.
Larry hughes- would have been last year despite his injury.
    Chauncey Billups
    Rip
    Pau

    1. Billups- Probably the most underrated point guard in the league he has led the Pistons to the finals twice making probably the most big shots out of anyone on the team in the playoffs. In my opinion he is one of the top five guards in the east overall, but people look for flash, points, dunking ability, and crazy assists when it comes to selecting all star point guards. Not the solid fundamentally sound point guards that can hit any shot he is given basically like Billups.

    2. Richard Hamilton- I want to see this guy make it at least once in his career. His team consistently wins he leads them in scoring with about twenty a game, and has yet to be an all star? Come on now. I felt he should have made it two years ago, but we will see.

    3. Carmelo Anthony- A talented player. I am the furthest thing from a Melo fan as there is, but he deserves it. He did not make it when it was in Denver though so I don?t know how good a chance he has this year unless he opens a lot of peoples eyes.

    4. Mike Bibby- He is the popular pick of the thread.

    5. Tony Parker- Don?t know why. Team success I guess, and the titles.

I don't know if he's underatted, he was overatted after winning finals MVP, since their were some people saying he was the best PG in the league because of that. Top 5 guard in the East? Don't know about that one....

Billups has a nice team and has had nice coaching around him, you can't compare him "leading" [didn't actually lead them himself] the Pistons to the finals, to someone like Iverson taking his team to the playoffs. Billups wouldn't carry Iverson's team to the playoffs, Iverson could take the Pistons to the finals if Larry Brown is coaching.

Better Guards: Iverson, Wade, Carter, Kidd, Arenas, Pierce, Marbury. Michael Redd and Larry Hughes are debatable, Hughes is a better all-round player, but has never been a 1st option, and is too injury prone. Redd is better as a first option, he lead the Bucks to the playoffs in 03-04, and played well against the Pistons too, I'd rank him higher. Francis puts up better numbers, but I don't like his game that much. Billups in the same role likely won't win as many games, so it's debatable, but Francis is an interesting one.

I don't like when people don't consider roles and teams when comparing players. Billups is a second option scorer on a team that has great defense, a very good starting lineup, decent depth, and great coaching. How can you consider him better on how far he "leads" his very good team to guys who are first option's on a much worse team, and getting more defensive attention? It's like when people talk about Tony Parker and use championships to rank him higher than someone else. He's been at best the 3rd best player on each of the championship teams.

Lastly, the coaches pick the reserves, if the coaches aren't putting him in year after year, then it has to say something. Also if he's a Top 5 guard, then it doesn't still gurantee him an All-Star spot since 4 guards make it, and possibly 5.

i have to call out Voodoochild on this one. The arguement of bibby not being able to do it with the grizzlies is completely erroneous as it was much earlier in Bibbys career.Youre comparing Bibby from back then with the Grizzlies to the current Gasol.Doesnt work.Bibby right now is a better player than Gasol.

No spot for Bibby is pretty hard to beleive, but the West`s best stars take up roster spots pretty quick.

I realize that it's almost irrelevant, but it was just a side point, not something I was basing my argument on; I still find it interesting none the less. Bibby was 23 the last season he played with the Grizzlies, and that year the Grizzlies went 23-59 with the a core that included Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Michael Dickerson, and Bryant Reeves. Gasol was 23 the last healthy season he played, and the Grizzlies went 50-32 with a core that included James Posey, Mike Miller, and Shane Battier. Again, almost irrelevant, but there are not many ways to compare Point Guards and Power Forwards.
