Perhaps he is a restricted free agent, and the T-wolves probably want something in return for him.

Sprewell is an unrestricted free agent. The reason there would be a trade is to sign and trade Sprewell from the Wolves so that he can get a bigger contract. The Lakers can only offer him what is left of their MLE(2.5 Million) and he wants more than that. Because Sprewell's last team was the Wolves they are allowed to sign him to a bigger contract. The Wolves probably won't be getting much more than a draft pick and a 3rd string bench player for him but it'll still be better than losing him for nothing, which is why it is very likely there will be a small sign and trade deal.
