Yao Ming will be another Rik Smits . The way he play and the way he move seem to be a mirror image of Rik Smits. If he is another Rik Smits That will be great for the team or would it?

I see the comparison, but Yao will be better. Yao has more physical tools. He's bigger, stronger, and just more talented than Smits was. But Smits was a little more crafty. Expect Yao get stronger this year.

I think Yao at this stage is a better post player than Smits has ever been. Smits got his points mainly from the perimeter, so Yao at this stage can back down defenders better. Defensively, I think both Smits and Yao are going to be similar, but I would believe Yao can get more blocks than Smits did. Their styles are great and I think that it would be great if Yao/TMac can form a Smits/Reggie combo.

Yao is already better than Smits was, and he's still improving. I do think that Yao is closer to a Smits or Ilgauskus right now than he is to Shaq.

Smits was good, but Yao has a much better post game (like someone else already mentioned)

yao is more aggressive than Smits...he's also a better defender and passer...the numbers may be similar but thats where the similarity ends...they are two completely different players, and I personally feel Yao will end up having a more successful career than Smits...

yAO A BETTER DEFENDER THEN RIK ! I don't know about that . He have to prove to us that he is a better defender and get out of foul trouble.

Yao is playing like Smits right now but it shouldnt last. Yaos got alot more years leff. And with the dedication Yao has this offseason it looks like he's ready to take his game to the next level.(hopefully)

Okay.....For all the Yao haters, let's put things in perspective. Smits, a very solid player his whole career; and very respected. Averaged 14pts and 6rebs his career. Yao, in his first 3 seasons, is at 18pts and 8 rebs. My point. Yao is already a very solid center. 3 seasons in the league, why put all the pressure on him. He's showed that he can play in this league, I don't know why people put unrealistic standards on my boy. He still needs work, but who didn't with only 3 years in the NBA. Yao's size is his biggest scapegoat for brainless critics................

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting uzairah:</div><div class="quote_post">who the hell is rik smits??</div>Quality NBA veteran who played 11 years with the Pacers during the 1990's. Wasn't much of a defender and rebounder but was a solid NBA center who scored very efficiently.

Right now yao's playing slightly above Smit at his prime, and it's only been 3 seasons. That tells you something. Yao will improve his game above Smit.
