Not until the very end of the season last year (particulary in the Dallas series) did we use Tracy and Yao running the pick and roll.....It was very effective against the mavs, because they had no answer for it....I mean Yao is 7'6 and he can hand out punishment on the picks....this gives TMac the option to either pull up for a jumper, drive to the basket, or pass the ball to Yao as he runs towards the basket...I feel if Yao and Tracy continue the run pick and roll to perfection that we can have a lot of success this season and in the future.
yea i think it will murder teams, i mean if they perfect the pick and roll like malone and stockton did then that'll be awesome
JVG should keep running it, even though a lot of people dont like it, it was extremely successful for us. We shouldnt have to run it as often though cause i think that with yao being stronger, he should be having the ball thrown to him in the post a lot more.
There is no reason we shouldn't. In fact if we don't continue to run the pick n roll, I think that I will be one of 4+ million Houstonians alone that will be calling for JVG's head. Its the most simple play in basketball and yet it is the most effective, when you have the right personel to do it. You can't get much better personel then a 6-7 SG that can shoot over anyone and a 7-6 C who has great touch.
Yeah, hopefully they continue to use it this season. It was effective against Dallas and I'm excited to see what we could do offensively with it in the regular season. We should get enough practise to use it really effectively in the playoffs. I don't think much teams have any answers to this as they're both really tall for their positions and will definitely cause problems with the opponents defense.
Yao sets a very solid pick, and McGrady is tall enough on switches to be able to see over defenders and spot the open Yao, and TMac is also great at taking it to the hoop by himself or shooting the mid range shot. What I would like to see though is having a pick by Yao, but not a roll. Yao will step back a few feet and either let TMac drive or pass it back out. Yao from mid-range is very high percentage and it reduces the risk of turnovers. That is, if Yao has his rookie season touch back. With Swift now in the paint, Yao won't have to always hang around inside for offensive rebounds.
Yeah, Yao would have more freedom to play a little midrange game compared to last year with Swift here now. Yao would hopefully bring his stats up a little due to this as his midrange J is pretty good for someone his size.

If the player guarding Yao switches and picks of T-Mac then Yao will roll to the basket. If they don't switch then look for Yao to pop up to the top of the key for a nice midrange jumpshot(15-18 feet). The pick and roll with Yao and Tracy is unstoppable really when you think of it.
What's gonna happen when the other teams PF has to rotate over to stop McGrady? Pick your poison. The TMac, Yao, Swift trio will be so deadly.
I think the TMac Stro pick n roll combo might be a lil better. He is quicker more athletic and can jump over people. Then if the center rotates to Stro, ally to Yao all day. Even on a pick n roll Yao's first step is still slow. DA,TMac, Stro and Yao is such an exciting 4 on paper.
Tmac Stro is what i would think would be the pick situation. Look for yao to clear the paint when he moves to the sideline because he can hit those jumpers when the pick happens.
I most def agree with everyone here- pick and roll is our new bread and butter. the only thing that can stop us is whiny owners and the refs! In all seriousness, if yao can quit with the moving picks we've got it made
The pick-and-roll is the staple of our offense...of course we'll use it...it'll be even more effective now that we have Alston at PG, which allows Wesley to spot up for 3s (instead of worrying about added ballhandling duties) and Anderson to look for his own offense (instead of worrying about playing PG as well)...the pick-and-roll, along with the single-double option for McGrady should be the main and primary facets of our offense...

When opposing centers switch on McGrady, they play him for the drive and back off a few feet. Of course I'm not saying that McGrady should shoot over centers every time a pick-n-roll occurs. If centers give him the space to pop, he should do it. If they play him close, then TMac could just go past them for a dunk. He's a smart player and he will most likely pick his spots well.
