i don't realy get this but how is he going to help? everyone that is a point guard are veterans and old except for luther? does the rockets see great future for luther? <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The end for Ward There were no tearful news conference, no long farewell. But Charlie Ward confirmed Tuesday that his playing career is over. "It's a transition from playing to coaching, but I still get an opportunity to be around the guys and be able to impart wisdom," said Ward, who began working as a Rockets assistant coach Tuesday. "I could have tried it, but it's a good career move." The move ends a unique playing career that brought Ward from Heisman Trophy winner to a fixture with the Knicks before he signed with the Rockets last season. The damage in his right knee became too severe for him to come back again. "I think he should be very, very proud of what he accomplished in his career, because he helped a lot of teams overachieve because of his toughness," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "He's always underestimated because he didn't have the And1 breakdown game and was very, very humble. "But one of the toughest competitors you would ever compete against. We always said Charlie would rip your heart out on the floor and then pray for you after. That's the kind of guy you want to surround yourself with." </div>
smart, tough point guard who knew how to run an offense and feed the big man down low...hes gonna help a lot...ward was a decent point guard and hes a bonafide leader...I believe that he'll be just as instrumental in alston's development as ewing is to yao's...
Ward is under contract for two more years, and his health wasn't going to allow him to play, so why not actually make use of him anyway? Van Gundy obviously likes having him around and making him assistance coach is definitely an answer. I don't think Ward will serve the same purpose as Ewing in mentoring Head, but he is a point guard who has played on winning teams in his career, and that experience is definitely going to help if Ward mentors Head and Alston.
It's sad to see him go but it's probably better for the team, we've cut down on out point guards so thats good news.
No..he doesn't count to our roster. He's retired from the game of playing and is now a coach. Good move for him and the Rockets IMO. I feel alot more comfortable with having something else that has the experience than just a coach to help our so called "Weakness" the PG spot.
I think he is a good guy for SKIP and L.Head to learn from because he is a JVG player and knows what is demanded from that guard spot. Rockets Pick up a roster spot, thats already filled by guys that are going to fight hard for it this preseason. Thats another thread though. CHARLIE WARD. BEST COLLEGE QB TO EVER PLAY IN THE NBA.
I like this move for H-Town. He was a great player in his day and I remember him having spectacular performances vs. the Heat back in the 90's. I think he will help a guy like Luther Head a lot. Again, great move for the Rockets.
Yes, It is time for ward to step down. Now that we have established that. What you'lls opinion on if anyone from training camp will make the roster that doesn't have a gauranteed contract?

Moochie Norris should stay on the roster regardless because of the lack of current depth at point guard, and with Baker negotiating a buyout, there should be enough roster spots to guarantee a spot for Baxter and one for the remaining three to fight over. I think Hayes will be the odd man out because he is undersized and playing at a crowed position. It'll be up to Glover and Langford to fight over it.
