Yahoo Sports HONOLULU (AP) -- The Los Angeles Lakers have waived Vlade Divac, a disappointment in his second go-round with the team. The Lakers had the option of picking up a one-year, $5.4 million contract option or buying him out for $2 million. Divac will be owed the $2 million if he clears waivers. The 37-year-old center underwent back surgery in January and played in only 15 games for Los Angeles last season, averaging 2.3 points and 2.1 rebounds. He had averaged 11.9 points and 8.3 rebounds in 15 previous NBA seasons, seven with the Lakers, two with Charlotte and six with Sacramento. --------------------- The Lakers also announced Thursday that they have signed center Adam Parada, a 7-foot center who last played in the NBA Developmental League. Vlade Divac was one of the best trading pieces for the Lakers this off-season because of his buyout. Instead of getting at least a servicable veteran or a draft pick, the Lakers get absolutely nothing for Divac. First they extended the deadline for another two weeks, and instead of keeping any options open they waive him just 6 days later.
Its sad to See a great player like Divac slip from the league in such an unhonorable way. Would have been nice to see him go out playing well.
I wish they didnt waive Floppy. I really loved watching Floppy play, like honestly he's probably my favorite European player.
wow! i agree with shape! i dont see why the lakers didnt chose to find a good trade for him. we couldve at least gotton a late second rounder for him! but instead, we let him go and sign a player who averaged 5 points and 3 rebounds in the NBA developmental league! another reason why mitch should be gone!

The year before he was playing 28.6 mpg for 81 games, which most players can't manage to do. He was also averaging 10 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 1 block pg, and 5.3 apg, while improving chemistry on his team. So I think the Divac signing was a tad expensive, but if he managed to play 24 mpg I don't the contract would be under much scrutiny.
Thats probably another reason why no other team would take him for a buyout... Unfortunately, he's worth nothing.... Honestly, what could you get for a player that sits on the bench for 5 mil???? Please tell me becasue I'd sure like to know....

A team could have saved $3Million trading for Divac. SkiptoMyLue11 - I never expected him to play for the Lakers this season. However, I did expect the Lakers to at least salvage someting in return for signing him to the MLE. There are plenty of teams in the league who would have liked to save at $3Million in salary cap space. Also at his age, you have to expect Vlade Divac to go through a stretch of injuries. So it wasn't as unexpected as you posted. He's also a chain smoker, which doesn't help his cause of staying healthy and being in shape.
