    Sez Anez's Review

    Day 3:

Just one practice today. Coach Hill gave his team the night off!

Lots of scrimmaging today. Kinda surprised about the lack of conditioning drills. But I guess Brian feels as if his team's in good condition after most of them scrimmaged together for the last three plus weeks. Everyone seems to be in pretty decent shape.

    Player by Player:

Stacey Augmon...Haven't seen him...Having hernia surgery...Won't be in uniform for a while.

Tony Battie...True pro! Love his work ethic. Undersized for a center but does the little things to help.

Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje...Tough to tell. Big body. Works hard. But will he make the team?

Travis Diener...I am rooting for this kid to make the team. I compare him to Scott Skiles, with a three point shot. I love his toughness. I love his drive. I hope there's a place for a kid like that in this league. I think he's gonna make this team. Question is: How much time will he spend in Estero in the NBDL?

Keyon Dooling...To me, this kid is the star of camp so far. I love the way he competes on the defensive end. Really challenges as a defender. Offensively, he's very skilled. He has the ability to hit the 17 foot jumper or go by you with a quick first step. Don't know how Brian's gonna keep him outta the starting lineup. Only concern is that sometimes he handles the ball recklessly. Then again, we're used to that!

Steve Francis...I think Steve is using this week to get comfortable with Brian's coaching style. Steve has been complimented numerous times by Coach Hill for his defense. Steve's tried defensively. Coach Hill knows he needs Stevie on both ends. He's multi-talented but his defense, or lack thereof, is a work in progress.

Matt Freije...I like the kid. He's tough. Can step back and bury a three on you. I just don't know if there's room for him on this team.

Pat Garrity...I am surprised at how well Pat's moving. I expected, post ACL surgery, that he would struggle at times. Now, Pat's not the most fleet of foot normally anyway, but he's moving well. I think Pat's gonna really enjoy Brian's inside out offense this year.

Grant Hill...On day one, Grant tripped over his own feet during a defensive drill. I gasped! Old habits, I guess. Grant looks good. He's moving well. Driving to the hole. His shot is a work in progress. He's beating people off the dribble again.

Dwight Howard...I asked Mick Smith if Dwight is officially a 7 footer. Mick's gonna get back to me on that. A mixed bag for Dwight so far. Athletically, the kid's off the charts. He's dunking and blocking shots. Coaches are really trying to school DH in the fundamentals. He's very coachable! As a matter of fact, I think he's a kid who really needs to be coaxed and motivated with a scream and a yell sometimes. Sky's the limit.

Mario Kasun...Been bothered by a bum ankle, but I am getting more and more comfortable with Mario. He looks like he gained alotta confidence in Eurobasket. I really believe Mario's gonna help us this year. He's a big body, and the kid's got skills. All he needs is playing time, and I think he'll get it with this coaching staff.

Jameer Nelson...Took off yesterday morning after the birth of his second child. Before that, Jameer was solid. He has the ability to lead. He and Diener have battled tooth and nail. Jameer's gonna get lots of playing time this year.

Bo Outlaw...Bo is Bo! He plays ball...He eats...He plays video games. Nothing's changed. Bo's partially guaranteed but will make this team.

Deshawn Stevenson...He's been in the "starting lineup" since day one. Not sure why that is, considering the other guards have been more impressive. Personal opinion: I think Coach Hill knows that if he's gonna get something from him, he'll get it as a starter. Not a very good bench player.

Hedo Turkoglu...Hedo's been the only player that, I think, has struggled so far. It may be due to a busy summer. He's just coming off Eurobasket. He got married and served in the Turkish army. Coach Hill is sending him a message early: Play defense or don't play at all. We all know Hedo is ultra-gifted offensively. But defensively, Hedo tends to relax. That cannot happen this year!

Greetings from Jax. Talk to you tomorrow...

GatorsOwnsTheSEC is going to be a very happy man when he reads this. He has been saying we should start Deshawn since the start of the offseason. I think Deshawn should get some minutes but I can't see us starting him over Jameer or Keyon.

Yah sorry. I could easily see Deshawn starting over nelson and dooling. It depends on what Francis plays. If he plays PG then Stevenson should/will probably start. If he plays SG then Nelson/Dooling/Diener will start.(Probably Nelson or Dooling. I can really only see Francis playing/starting at SG because there are way too many PGs if he starts and plays at PG.

Basically I just want Francis to start at PG, not SG. Stevenson is really our only true SG, so that's why I have been saying to start him. He won't demand a lot of touches, which is perfect for Hill, Francis, Dwight and he plays solid D. Let Grant Hill bring the ball up more to take it out of Francis's hands.
