Here's the whole article. Looks like Miles is doing well and Taft finally practices. KAHUKU, Hawaii -- Forward Ike Diogu, the Warriors' top draft pick, broke his left ring finger Sunday, the team announced. He sustained the injury during an extra practice Sunday. The rookies held a mini-session after the main practice at Kahuku High School on the island of Oahu. The three draft picks -- Diogu, Monta Ellis and Chris Taft -- and four of the five training camp invitees -- Aaron Miles, Ray Young, Deji Akindele and Justin Davis -- went over plays and ran a full-court, three-on-three drill. Diogu, selected No. 9 overall, was going up for a basket when he was stripped by Young. He writhed in pain after the play as executive vice president Chris Mullin and general manager Rod Higgins looked on. Diogu was attended to while the drill continued. His ring finger was taped to his pinkie and he continued playing. Diogu said he was fine afterward. During a later examination it was learned he broke the fourth metacarpal on his left hand. He will be re-evaluated when the team returns to Oakland on Thursday. How long he'll be out will be determined then. Miles impresses Miles has been one of the pleasant surprises of Warriors training camp. Miles -- who at 6-foot-1, 175 pounds went undrafted out of Kansas -- has impressed Warriors management such that he might be on his way to earning a roster spot. "He's fundamentally sound," Warriors coach Mike Montgomery said. "He's a hard worker, not backing off at all. He runs the team. I think he's been a surprise, just his poise coming into camp." Miles was called back for a second workout with the Warriors during the pre-draft process. The Warriors saw enough to invite him to camp despite having three point guards on the roster. Because he's a pass-first point guard whose strengths lie in finding teammates and running the offense, he fills a need for the Warriors, who have three scoring point guards in Baron Davis, Derek Fisher and Ellis. Even more, Montgomery said Ellis is better playing off the ball right now and has a ways to go before he can run the point. "He's been well coached having Roy Williams and Bill Self," Montgomery said of Miles. "They put him in position where he understands how to do things. But again, coming in here with some pretty good players and being able to hold his own like he has, it's pretty impressive. He's not backed off. He's been tough. He's shown leadership." If the Warriors kept Miles, he likely wouldn't play. Not that Miles would mind. "Whether it be just for the purpose of practice, an extra body pushing Baron and Derek and Monta, I see myself helping this team," Miles, 22, said. "I don't have to be on the court to affect the game or affect the team in a positive way." Tip-ins Fisher missed most of Sunday's practice with a tender left ankle, which he tweaked in Saturday's evening practice. He received treatment before participating in a drill toward the end. ... Taft practiced Sunday, his first full-length practice of training camp. He was hobbled by his strained right groin, but it was "better than sitting on the side." ... Tuesday's game against the Los Angeles Lakers will air on FSNBA at 10 p.m. The telecast will be preceded by the preseason special "Warriors Basketball -- Let's Get It Started" at 9, the first of seven airings, and "Warriors Roundtable Live" at 9:30. -- Marcus Thompson II http://www.contracostatimes.com/mld/cctime...ts/12864431.htm
Diogu better play still if he can. I dont know how effective he will be but I want to see something from him. I mean, I know football players play through it. I think he could too as long as it is on his non-shooting hand. On a side note, it is good to see the work ethic of the rookies and invitees...
yeah I agree, any time he loses now is very valuable and can very well set the tone for his whole season. Especially since it seems like he was having trouble understanding the offensive and defensive sets.
I just realized it was his 4th metacarpal. That is the bone in your HAND underneath the finger, not the actual digit itself. This is probably going to require a cast. Lets see if Diogu can still tough it out. If it is his not shooting hand the only aspect of his game that would be hampered is his catching/dribbing ability. If he is right handed he should still be able to post up on the right block and catch the ball with his left hand. I hope he still plays and does not hold back until they get back to Oakland. If it was me I would take a pain killer, have it protected in some sort of splint or something and try to convince the coach I could still play on it. I mean he taped it up and finished the practice. That would have done nothing for his hand itself...
The latest report has changed to Diogu breaking his left hand now, and will miss at least the first two games of preseason.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting shapecity:</div><div class="quote_post">The latest report has changed to Diogu breaking his left hand now, and will miss at least the first two games of preseason.</div> That is basically what I said. The metacarpal are the thin bones in your hands connected to your knuckles basically. (Anatomy major)
We have a month until the season starts so things could be worse. This will probably give more time to Zarko which is a good thing since the kid is very talented. I'm guessing Diogu will miss a couple of weeks of the season but still practice and try to learn the system. We really need for Foyle and Biedrins to pick up the slack. Foyle added that 12 pounds of muscle so he better start throwing it around. Beans too. Taft is actually practicing with the team now so he could get some minutes too. All he has to do is throw his big body around, grab some boards, finish strong and use his baby hook, sit down and dispense the gatorade.
Here's the latest on Diogu: <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The Warriors won't know how long Diogu will be out until he's re-evaluated when the team returns to Oakland on Thursday. The hope is that Diogu is out just a couple of weeks, possibly allowing him to play in one of the final two exhibition games -- Oct. 24 against the Los Angeles Clippers in Missoula, Mont., and Oct. 27 at the Phoenix Suns. Realistically, he'll likely be out at least three to four weeks. That would slate his return during the first road trip, which starts Nov. 6 at New York in the Warriors' third game of the season. </div> http://www.contracostatimes.com/mld/cctime...rs/12872124.htm

Hey, maybe Taft will see some action? Who besides Diogu is a powerful finisher inside? And besides, why risk our starters for some preseason games that don't count (Sit Murphy/Zarko/Baron because those guys can be brittle). Play some Ellis, Dfish and that Aaron Miles, maybe? EDIT: forgot Taft was still hurt.
Diogu was injured Sunday at training camp in Laie, Hawaii. He can still run and shoot free throws, and he will continue to learn the team's system by observing. ``It's unfortunate he got hurt. Ike was making progress,'' Warriors Coach Mike Montgomery said. ``Fortunately it wasn't as serious as some injuries. He'll have to learn from watching for now.'' Ike was already a decent free throw shooter. Hopefully he can stay sharp at least. http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews...rs/12910586.htm
Sounds like in that article Taft is in Monty's dog house... • Montgomery said second-round pick Chris Taft was ``getting better'' but will need substantial practice time before seeing the floor in an exhibition. Taft is bothered by a strained right groin and back. ``He has to prove to us that he won't hurt himself from not being in shape,'' Montgomery said. ``That's why he pulled his groin. Had he been in shape, he probably would be fine.'' Taft suffered the injury during the first day of training camp. Come on Monty, ease up on the guy a bit. He suffered a pretty serious back injury and could not work out at all for some time...
I didn't necessarily get that impression, WFS93. I think Taft has what Baron Davis' problem was. He just gains weight. If he's motivated, recovery shouldn't be a problem, but he already had rumors of bad work ethic issues whereas Baron is hardworking and was always an energy player.
Yeah, I hope Monty is not letting his bad work ethic rep influence his opinion of Taft. I just hope Taft can recover and show us some of those thundering dunks we heard about during the summer league...

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Warriorfansnc93:</div><div class="quote_post">Why do you say that?</div> Because he wedged his back right on top of Ramos's head. I don't know about the groin injury, but the back thing was pretty evident in that game. He had to be taken out.
