<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">NEW YORK -- Duke's Mike Krzyzewski was picked to coach the U.S. basketball team for the 2006 world championships and 2008 Beijing Olympics, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The Hall of Famer was chosen during a USA Basketball conference call last week, said the person, who did not wish to be identified because the announcement has not been made. Official word was supposed to come Oct. 29.

The American men are trying regroup after finishing sixth at the 2002 world championships in Indianapolis and third at the 2004 Olympics. The team at the Athens Games was without several top NBA players and was coached by Larry Brown.

Those teams were the first not to win gold medals in World Championship or Olympic competition since play was opened to professionals.

The U.S. Olympic Committee had no comment Wednesday. USA Basketball media relations director Craig Miller wouldn't confirm or deny the report but said he wasn't told to have an announcement pending anytime soon.

The USA Basketball executive committee holds its annual meeting Nov. 9-10 in Colorado Springs, Colo., where members are expected to go over budget and other issues, including possibly confirming the choice for the next head coach.</div> source

Good choice, but college coaches always don't make the best transition to coaching the NBA level. I think Coach K is capable of doing so never the less.

But he isnt making the transition to the NBA, he is taking NBA players to play a game that is much more similar to College basketball than the NBA. It makes a lot of sense to pick a college coach here (though I think they should use college players too)>

I know that, but what I mean is most pro players are different from college players. So the better question is will he be able to get NBA players to adjust to a game that is more like that of college basketball?

The college game is much more like the olympics than the NBA game; for that reason it makes a lot more sense to have a college coach than an NBA coach.

Great choice by the committee if this is in fact true.

Mike Krzyzewski is the best basketball coach at any level(HS, NCAA, NBA, etc.) so it is only fitting that he will coach the Olympic team.

    Second to Dean Smith!

Anyhow, I expect by 2008 that more than half the team will be made up of college players.

    3rd to Bob Knight!!!

It was a good move by the comittee. COach K has more time to prepare for this instead of Gregg Popo or any other nba coach who would be too busy to do this. COach K can handle college and nba players. i think behind K and a well balanced team(not a bunch of egostistic players who can sell jerseys)can redeem domination in worldwide basketball again. Purple dont go too far with Coach K. He's not the best coach. I can name at least 5 coaches better then him.

Awesome. Please name me five active basketball coaches that you would rather have coach your basketball team then Coach K. Then lets have a site poll to decide whether your opinions match up with other basketball fans.

There are a few coaches at the level of Coach K and you could even make a case for some of them as possibly better coaches but 5?

I am dying to see your list....
