<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Steven Hunter was nervous going into his first game as a 76er last night, but there was more to his apprehension than merely making sure he knew the plays and meshed with his new teammates.

The 7-foot Hunter, who played last year for the Phoenix Suns before signing a five-year, $16 million free-agent contract with the Sixers, had heard about the reputation of those demanding Philadelphia fans.

"I was real nervous because I had heard rumors about the way these fans were," Hunter said after the Sixers dropped a 105-91 decision to the Houston Rockets in the team's preseason opener at the Wachovia Center.

"But then I settled down and I said to myself, 'You know what? I just have to play my game and do my best because if I listen to what other people say, or let people dictate how I play, then everything will go bad.' "

The crowd of 13,895 appeared to accept the game as it was - the preseason opener for both teams. So Hunter wound up hearing nothing from the fans during his foul-troubled night.

Starting at center in place of the injured Samuel Dalembert, Hunter played just 17 minutes, winding up with four points, five rebounds and three turnovers.

"You hear all the horror stories about Philadelphia sports fans and then you get a chance to get in here and see for yourself," teammate Allen Iverson said. "It's in the back of your head.

"He wanted to play well for the first game, and then you're nervous and you make a couple of mistakes. You can't judge him off the first game. I thought his effort was great."</div>
