Miles hit a 3-pointer in the waning seconds of regulation and Robert Whaley had a follow shot before the buzzer in overtime as the Jazz rallied twice for a 102-101 win over the Toronto Raptors in the preseason opener for both teams. Toronto took an 89-86 lead on three free throws in the final minute of the fourth quarter by Tierre Brown, who finished with 24 points. However, Miles, the 34th overall pick out of Skyline High School in Dallas, Texas, answered on the other end. Miles missed a jumper with six seconds to go before Whaley, the 51st selection from Walsh University, got the rebound and kicked it out to his fellow rookie. With a second chance, Miles drilled a 3-pointer with 2.4 seconds left to tie it. Miles' free throw with 40 seconds to go in OT gave the Jazz a 100-96 lead before the Raptors responded with five straight points, the last two on a jumper by rookie Charlie Villanueva with 17 seconds left. Villanueva, the seventh overall pick from Connecticut, blocked an attempt by Miles on the other end but Whaley was able to put in a follow shot with 0.8 seconds left to give Utah the win. Miles scored 14 points and Andre Owens added 13 for the Jazz. Brown, who is trying to make his fifth team in as many seasons, made 12-of-14 free throws and Villanueva scored 15 points for Toronto. I don't know much about this C.J Miles guy but despite the points he seemed very trigger happy. 5-15? Ouch. Good win nevertheless, even though it's preseason a winning mentality is always good, especially for a young team.
C.J. Miles led the Jazz in points with 14, but he shot 5-15 from the court, including 1-5 from 3. The Jazz committed 33 turnovers. There were some positive signs for Utah, such as Robert Whaley getting 8 points and 8 rebounds in 19 minutes.
