Bubba has just signed a long term deal WOOOOOO! Im so fricken happy that we have our star tight end back! He may not be the Yac type of Te that Gates is but he's one of the dealiest players in the league when it comes to the Redzone, not to mention he has become one of the top blocking ends in the league. http://www.nfl.com/teams/story/GB/8767997
I know. I wake up turn on ESPN and boom flashing at the bottom say Franks signs long term extension. Good day today. We needed him. Now our offense is primed.
That is excellent news. I'm happy for Franks and for the team. Hopefully we can get him here in time for the last pre-season game.
Let me get this straight. If you come into camp, then you don't get a new deal. If you holdout, then you get a fat new contract. Got it.
its actually kinda sick how the ppl who dont put effort into ur camp get the contracts and the ppl who do put a lot of effort into camp dont get the contracts. a little wierd how that works

Thats the way the Packers are. I don't know why but thats how they go about it.

Porky, do you know if the Packers require that contracts be a certain length when players sign? Most teams require players, especially rookies, to sign for a certain number of years. Most rookies don't get the big bucks that 1st round draft picks do, so they're caught in a catch-22. They had to sign for so many years, but then the team has a rule that they don't get to renegotiate until the last year no matter how well they perform. The front office doesn't give a crap. They're not risking anything. I think it's safe to say that the Packers GM won't blow his knee out on an NFL football field this year.

I don't want to see Javon Walker leave. I don't want to see Grady Jackson leave. It's just something that Bob Harlan and even Ron Wolfe always did. They redo 1 year deals but not 2 year deals.
Bubba really didn't even have a contract, plus Bubba has been durible and reliable since he was drafted he didn't have to wait 2 or 3 years to break out , If Walker plays aswell this year as he did last year then im all for giving him a new deal, Grady Jackson can take his negative a@@ somwhere else after this season.
In my eyes, that shows the Packers' front office cares more about their rules, then they do about the players. Why are people so surprised when players don't show much loyalty to a team?

I do get disgusted with it when they don't show up for camps and take it to shows but I can't change what they do so I accept that. I do like how Bubba and his agent handled the situation. Kept a low profile even here in GB and got the deal done. Maybe Drew coule take a note on that. I am hoping GB gives Javon Walker a new long term contract if he has a year like he did last. I like Walker and think he is a great bright spot. I hope we get Green's deal done to. I mean when Favre leaves like the Packers or not Rodgers will step in with a pretty solid supporting cast around him. Walker and Green getting sign is very important to me as a fan and I hope to the front office as well.
I'm curious. Other than holding out, what leverage do you see a player having to try and get the front office to know that they mean business? (The front office wins the battle in the press everytime. I don't know why, but people will ignore the money that a franchise makes and call the player greedy.) People seem to assume that if the player does the right thing, then the front office will do right by the player. Personally, I don't believe that for a second. I think that players have to stand up for themselves sometimes.

Both sides wanted a long term deal, they just could agree on terms. Since Bubba wasn't under contract, technically, him "holding out" is a different situation than Walker holding out with two years left on his contract. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>It's because the front office is trying to save money and making rules like this is one way they can justify paying players less than their fair market value. You need to keep 53 players under contract without screwing your salary cap number, and to do that, you need to have a lot of young players, rookies and average free agents on your team to balance what you pay your stars. There's a reason the Packers have the best winning percentage of any NFL team since the salary cap era began, and it's not just Brett Favre. It's good cap management.

I just wonder how accepting Javon Walker will be in the future if the Packers ever turn to him for cap relief after they have shown no flexibility with him this year.

Now granted you wont get in a middle of the media outburst.</div> This isn't a good comparison. I'm not under contract to work for anyone. I can accept another job for another company anytime that I want to move on. Jevon Walker has to play for the Packers even if someone would pay him more money. Even if Walker makes the next two Pro Bowls, the Packers can make him play far below his market value. Then, when his contract is up, they can franchise him. That would get his pay up, but he wouldn't get a long term deal. Of course, a long term deal is overrated because franchises don't have to honor their contracts.
Well thats the way it is. It's not just the Packers though. It could hurt them to. All you've mentioned is that what if Walker gets hurt. Well what if Green Bay pays him and he gets hurt or what if GB pays him and he never has a good year again because Favre made him look good. Thats why I am not a big fan of the "what if game" Now I still expect big things out of Walker as a fan. I expect him to get paid after this year as well. It'll be intresting how this turns out in the long run. I just don't like the fact that Rosenhaus takes his clients contracts public. You can tell he is using the TO and a little bit with Walker to gain the publicity so he can aquire more clients. Hopefully Walker and Ahman Green who is in his last year gets their deals next off-season. I'd like to see Green's done during the year or Davenport if they plan on letting Green go but I rather have Green. I of course am not in charge of making the deals. All I can do is watch. Leverage or not thats the way football is and I don't know if it'll ever change.

If he doesn't perform up to the contract, then the Packers tell him we're going to renegotiate your contract or we're going to cut you. Teams have lot of options. Players not so many.
